Research Notes:
inherited half of the land where his father then lived, via father's Will of 4
Apr 1737, and was nominated to be one of the two executors of his father's
estate. In addition, John Shannon owned other land adjacent to his father's
land there in Sadsbury Township, Lancaster Co. The other half of his father's

1746: commissioned Captain in Indian War against Quebec [Ref: Dedman SHANNON

June 1746 John Shannon was given a commission as Captain and ordered to raise
a Company of troops for an expedition against French Canada and their Indian
allies. This was during "King George's War." The company was formed and sent
to Albany, New York where it spent the winter. It was finally disharged on
Oct 31 1747, the attack having been postponed [Ref: BrackenHB BRACKEN p87]

Jan 7 1768: John Shannon Jr appeared in Orphan's Court and asked for a
division or arrangement of his father's estate, stating that his father had
died intestate, leaving a widow and eleven children. Widow's name given as

By the honourable George Thomas, Esquire, Lieutenant Governor and
Commander-in-Chief of the Province of Pennsylvania, and Counties of Newastle,
Kent, and Sussex, on Delaware.
Whereas, His Majesty, by His Orders of the Ninth of April last, signified
unto me by his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, one of His Majesty's principal
Secretaries of State, hath impowered and Commanded me to raise a Number of Men
in the Province under my Government, for an Expedition against Canada: These
are in His Majesty's Name to authorize and impower you, JOHN SHANNON,
Esquire, to beat up for Volunteers within the said Government, in order to
raise a Company, which is to consist of one hundred men, including Four
Sergeants, Four Corporals, and Two Drummers, of which you are to be Captain,
Provided you shall compleat your Levy in time for Marching the said Company to
Albany, or to such other Place as shall be appointed by the Honorable
Brigadier General GOOCH, or by the Commanding Officer for the time being.

Instructions to John Shannon:
Pursuant to His Majesty's Orders, you will herewith receive a Warrant for
Raising a Company of one hundred men for an Expedition against Canada, with a
Printed Copy of the Proclamation Issued by me; from whence you may certifie
what Encouragement will be given by His Majesty, to such as shall engage in
this Service.
You are likewise hereby authorized to assure Them, that they shall receive
a Dollar upon Enlisting,, and Three Pistoles in Gold, before they go out of
this Province, for the Support of their Families in their Absence, or to be
laid out in such other mannar as they shall think fit.
You are to Enlist none but healthy, able body'd men, not exceeding
forty-five years of Age, and of good Stature, and you are to be very careful
that they be not ruptured, nor under any other bodily disorder, which may be
an impediment to their Marching.
You are to take special Care not to receive any other into the Service but
Protestants and such as will take the Oath prescribed by the Articles of War,
and you are forthwith, after Enlisting, to carry them before a Magistrate for
that purpose.
You are to provide quarters for the Men Enlisted, in the best manner you
can, until they shall receive marching orders, taking care that the Expence
does not exceed the King's Substance, which is sixpence sterling per Dieum for
each man.
You are, during their continuance in quarters, to Exercise them daily, and
as the time may be too short for perfecting them in the whole Manual Exercies
and Evolutions, you must be very diligent in teaching them the Facings,
Wheelings, and Firings, that they may load and fire quick and regular.
