Research Notes:
ClaysvillePA Recorder 11/1886:
Died: Scott Nov 6th 1886. After a lingering illness of pulmonary
consumption Mrs. Madge Todd Scott, wife of Rev. John C. Scott and daughter of
Jas. Todd Esq., aged 36 years 1 month and 2 days.
The deceased was born of scotch-irish parentage two generations out, and
received a careful religeous training, uniting with the presbyterian church of
West Alexander Pa in the 17th year of her age. She received such education as
the public schools and Academy of her native place afforded, and later was
graduated from the Academy of Music in Xenia, Ohio. She was married September
1878, and some months later went with her husband to live in Hoboken N.J.,
where the greater part of her married life was spent, and where her disease
was contracted. A few months before her death she returned to her early home
and there she died.
It could not be said that she was a woman of eminent faith and piety. Her
religeous life was rather of a simple and ordinary kind. She earnestly sought
to do her duty in her home and in the community where her lot was cast. In
many practical ways she was helpful to her husband in the work of the
ministry, taking an active part in outside religeous and charitable work, and
by a ready sympathy endeared herself to those whom she met. She regretted
much that, owing to narrow and crabid surroundings, she was not better able to
use her special talent in assisting in the worship of the congregation. A
minister who met her frequently writes of her: "I was impressed with her calm,
cheerful and sturdy Christian character. In her quiet and pleasant way she
was in character a strong woman." A good deal that is written in the closing
chapter of Proverbs might be truthfully said of her. "Her work is done and
she has gone to her reward. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."
