CrestlineOH Advocate 5/15/1947:
Highlighting locally the observance of National Music Week, was the
reception, Thursday evening, May 8, in the school cafeteria, honoring Miss
Bessie Todd, teacher of piano in Cresline and Galion for many years.
The function was arranged to give an opportunity to present and former
pupils and their parents, including out-of-town pupils, some from a distance,
to pay tribute to the moving spirit of one, whose life and love for music has
meant so much to the cultural life of this vicinity. [more]

GallionOH Inquirer 10/3/1950:
With the passing of Miss Bessie Todd yesterday afternoon, the communities
of Galion and Crestline lost their most widely known teacher of piano and a
person who has developed scores of talented musicians. Ill health for the
past several years resulted in her death yesterday afternoon at 2:50 o'clock
in Galion City hospital, where she was admitted five weeks ago.
Miss Todd made her home at 308 South Street, Crestline, and at the same
time called Galion her adopted home. She maintained studios in her Crestline
home and in the Maccabee building, Public Square here, where for a period of
some 40 years she taught piano.
Her influence in advancing music in these communities was extensive and
through a series of Sunday afternoon concerts she presented talented musicians
and provided funds for fine instruments to be used by students and in musical
entertainments.
For approximately 15 years she conducted piano classes in the Galion and
Crestline schools in addition to her private classes. In April, 1949, she
fractured a hip in a fall at her home and had been confined to her residence
and to local hospitals much of the time since then. She was present for a
piano recital by one of her recent pupils, Theodore L. Rehl, last June 25 in
Galion High school auditorium despite frail health.
Miss Todd was guest of honor at a recognition banquet in Crestline High
school in May, 1946, and guests at the open house included many of some 500
former pupils.
She took two trips abroad, the first just prior to World War I which was
cut short by mobilization. Later she spent an enjoyable summer in travel and
study in Europe.
Born in Alliance on Feb. 20, 1873, Bessie L. Todd was the only daughter of
William and Charlotte Lawson Todd, both natives of West Alexander, Pa. She
came to Crestline as a young girl with her parents and four brothers, now
deceased. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her
brothers were Clarence, Joseph, Harold, and Dr. H. W. Todd.
Miss Todd attended Crestline schools and after graduation from the high
school studied music in Detroit after which she began teaching piano, a
profession she followed for over 50 years.
Survivors include a niece, Mrs. Ralph Eck, and nephew, Herbert L. Todd,
both of Van Wert; a cousin, Mrs. Charles Edgar, Claysville, Pa., and
sister-in-law, Mrs. Clarence Todd, Van Wert.
Rev. R. R. Eiliker of First Evangelical and Reformed church will conduct
funeral services at the Snyder funeral home on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., followed
by interment in Fairview cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after
7 o'clock tonight until the hour of the service.
