Letter from William N. Todd to neice, Mrs. D. S. (Hazel) Meaden, 429 Williams
Blvd, Springfield, IL, from Crestline, Ohio, April 1916
My Grandfather William Todd never left any family tree records that I ever
heard of except what was verbal. Grandfather William died when my father
James was about 16 years old with only a few days sickness. Grandfather Wm
was conceded the most powerful man in all the community. He was drafted to be
a soldier in the War of 1812; was gone several weeks but did not reach the
front before peace was proclaimed and he was mustered out. My grandmothers
name before married, was Betty Neely. She had two sisters and three brothers,
all of whom I knew well. As to grandfathers brothers and sisters I could not
say how many but evidently several.
A little colony Neelys' Todds, Gillespys' kindreds migrated from Ireland.
They first settled near Philadelphia where they landed, I believe Westchester
County. From this place they separated. Some of the Todds going up the
Hudson N.Y., some to Ky, some to some of the counties east of Pittsburgh.
Grandfather William Todd, the Neelys', and Gilespy coming to near Claysville,
Washington County, PA. After a short sojourn, grandfather Todd purchased the
old farm home near West Alexander, Pa., just over the Ohio border into Pa.
They moved when father was 7 years old [1816]. Grandfather then built the
largest and finest hewn two story log house in the whole country, together
with a then-largest weaving shop. Running four imported weavers looms. He
was a professional weaver by trade in Ireland, and his children (my uncles and
aunts) William, John, Dorcas, Jane, Mary, and Martha were all expert weavers,
and paid for the old farm by weaving linens of all grades up to 95 threads to
the inch - fine. And flannels, blankets for home use, as well as
woolsey-lincy that went to England. Growing the wool and the flax on the farm
and preparing it all by hand (without any machinery) to make the product.
Many a time, grandmothers spinning wheel was sung me to sleep when I was a
child. [Ref: William Todd 4/1916]
letter from Dr. Frank L. Todd, March 20, 1935
I have lived in Pittsburgh since 1888, until last October when I had a
severe attack of Angina Pectoris which compelled me to stop all work. In
August 1898, I spent a week in Wilmington, Del. While there, I met a Doctor
John Todd, and in conversation with him, got the following information. He
was then 80 years old. I was 37. He told me that William Todd who married
Elizabeth Neely was his uncle. His father John Todd and William Todd were
brothers. That these ancestors came from Ireland to America later in November
1754; landed at New London, Conn., where they remained that winter and going
then to some place in New Jersey where they remained for three years. They
then divided to go west and went to Lancaster Co, PA, where they remained
until after the Revolutionary War. There was a large colony of them and land
in Lancaster Co cost too much for them, so the colony split - one part going
to Delaware, and then on into Virginia. The other part went on into (west)
Westmoreland Co, PA, from this colony, a smaller one split off and proceeded
farther west into what is now Washington, Co, Pa. Stopping about one mile
south of the present borough of Claysville, and there my father James Sawhill
was born. The 7th of 10 children. When James was 3 years old, Grandfather
(Wm Todd and Eliz Neely) again moved across the line into the panhandle of
Virginia, Ohio County. In this colony were the names Neely, Byers, McDonald,
Yates, Sawhill, Larrimor, Lughlin, Smith, Todd, Sutherlands, McCoy, Craig,
Stewarts, Gillespie, and others. [Ref: Frank Todd 3/20/1935]
another letter from Dr. Frank Todd, date unknown:
At the close of the war, the government made some trouble over the
distribution of land and many farmers were ejected. They heard that land was
cheap in the western part of the state, so they decided to hasten thither.
The colony kept together for safety and to keep from getting lost in the
dense forests. The whole colony traveled partly on foot and partly on
horseback - their goods carried in packsaddles.
The reason for the location near West Alexander, Pa, is that some kin of
William Todd and Elzabeth Neely had settled in the vacinity of Five Ridges
(West Alexander); some land was to be had by pre-emption or homesteading; the
land was good and the Colonists tired from their long trek from Lancaster,
decided to settle there. [Ref: Frank Todd c1935]
John Todd and wife, Mary Gillespie, lived in Milltown Co Antrim, Ireland, and
were linen weavers. Their sons John and William emigrated to this country
first and were followed by James and George. They settled in Maryland it is
reported -- also a record says they settled in Chester Co. PA.
How long they lived in either place is not known but early in the years of
the 1800's William bought a farm in Virginia the nearest town being West
Alexander, Pa. Here he set up a linen weaving establishment fine linens and
linsy-woolsy which they sold in England. William died when his son James was
a small boy. William enlisted in the war of 1812 but did not see active
service.
Milltown, Ireland, is now a part of Belfast according to report.
George Todd settled in Kentucky and no trace of him has been found.
