Excerpts of Funeral address of Dr. Macartney:
"The beloved physician." That is the beautiful encomium with which St.
Paul hands down to immortality the name of his friend, companion, fellow
traveller, and physician, St. Luke - Luke the beloved physician.
There are not a few to whom this beautiful phrase will come to mind when
they think of our friend, Dr. Todd. A great company of those to whom he was
their physician will so speak of him and so remember him; and a still larger
company of those with whom he had no professional relationship, will think of
him as the physician who was beloved.
Here on a farm, not far from this village, the earthly life of Dr. Todd
commenced, on ____, and here in the church of his ancestors it comes to a
close. Dr. Todd came of a godly, industrious, intelligent, self-respecting
line. "Men do not gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles". His father,
James Todd, became a ruling elder in this church in 1857. His mother, Mary
Byers, was a descendant of the first minister of this church, Dr. Brice. How
often I have heard Dr. Todd, who had such a clear memory of the past, relate
his delightful reminscences of this place, and the home where he was born, and
the farm where he was brought up; the sheep, cattle, horses, the winter's
snow, the harvest and the reaping. He would speak, too, of the family altar
and of the prayers which his godly father offered for the welfare and
happiness of his children.
Dr. Todd was one of a family of twelve children, seven sons and five
daughters, all of whom lived useful, honorable lives, and some of whome rose
to distinction. Four of the sons became ruling elders in the Presbyterian
Church, and three of them were practicing physicians; a tradition which is
maintained in the family, for a nephew of Dr. Todd, Dr. ___ Todd, now conducts
a hospital in Canton, China.
Dr. Todd's family was one of marked musical talend, and the boys of the
family constituted a band which was known as "Todd's Band", and which played
at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Dr. Todd's father
taught his sons to love their country, and two of them fought for the Union on
the battlefields of the Civil War.
Dr. Todd had the advantage of hearing the Word of God in this church from a
minister of piety and distinction, the Rev. Dr. William DeHaven Lester. Dr.
Lester baptized Dr. Todd as a child into the Christian faith, received him
into the church, and prepared him for college in the old West Alexander
Academy. Dr. Todd bore the name of this minister, Frank Lester Todd.
In 1885 Dr. Todd graduated from Washington & Jefferson College. He taught
for a time in Trinity Hall, a Preparatory School on the outskirts of
Washington, and then went to San Francisco, where he was a tutor in the family
of the late United States Senator from California, Mr. Whitney. Not long ago,
Dr. Todd showed me a letter from one of the daughters whom he had instructed,
and who expressed gratitude, admiration and affection for the tutor of her
youth.
In 18__ Dr. Todd entered the West Penn Medical College in Pittsburgh, and
was graduated in 1890. After his graduation he was for a year an intern at
the West Penn Hospital, one of the first class of interns to serve in that
Hospital. He then entered upon the practice of his profession in Allegheny,
and for forty-five years was a skillful, kind, honorable and faithful
physician. Many families in Pittsburgh today, some of whom are present this
afternoon, rise up to call Dr. Todd blessed.
Now the life of this good and useful man has, for this world, come to a
close. There is no accasion for regret or sadness.
"Nothing is here for tears, nothing to wail
Or knock the breast; no weakness no contempt,
Dispraise or blame; nothing but well and fair,
And what may quiet us in a death so noble." -Milton
Here, then, in this church of his ancestors, where he first confessed his
faith in Christ, we bid farewell to him. We leave him in the arms of that
Compassionate Saviour, in Whom he put his trust, and Who he followed through
the pilgrimage of this life. May God accept him, and may Christ, Who died for
sinners, receive him. [Ref: Funeral address of Dr. Macartney]
