youngest of thirteen children [Ref: Eagleson BYERS p4]
To commemorate a harrowing event that occurred to members of this family in
1789 during an Indian uprising in SouthWestern Pennsylvania, the following
poem was composed and published in 1887 by the Reverend Frank P. Britt,
Presbyterian minister of Corsica, Pennsylvania
The Vigil of Margaret Byers
Far down the dim vista of narrowing years
In the times of privation to which we are strangers,
When men took their lives in their hands and mid tears
Went forth to their duties and bridled their fears,
For homes and for loved ones thus risking great dangers,
A mother's lone vigil true praises inspires,
The fearful night vigil of Margaret Byers.
-
Brave woman who dared with her husband to share
His hardships and dangers, in wifely affection,
She watched for his coming almost in despair,
Her hand on the cradle, her heart all in prayer
Her nerves all a-quiver from fear of detection,
Each moment of the Indian's dire wrath in such dread
And fearing, e'en now her dear husband was dead.
-
Alone in her peril, no neighbors anear,
She watched by her darlings long after the gloaming,
But still she heard naught of her husband so dear,
And still must contend with the harrassing fear
Of savages doubtless the forest then roaming,
O, how can she longer such agony bear,
With none to give help and her burder to share!
-
At last as the moments seem lengthened to days,
She hears the belled steeds that he sought in the distance,
But when they rush in and each charger displays
Such terrible fright as he prances and neighs
Nor bring the poor wife her good husband's assistance,
Her fears all return and ten fold more intense
Are the pangs of her heart in her awful suspense.
-
And O, could a welcome have been more sincere,
When softly he came as her heart was nigh broken,
Though words were suppressed and restrained was each tear
Lest e'en a faint sound to some listening ear
Might prove to their foes of their presence a token?
Then noiselessly forth from their cabin they stole
For the sheltering fort with each dear little soul.
-
Her husband, the eldest; while she to her breast
Held close her sweet babe, its low sobbing to smother.
And thus with her loves through the forest she pressed,
Unheeding rocks, brambles, and thorns that distressed
The tender young flesh of this young loving mother.
With never a sigh, all for love and for life
That perilous path trod this excellent wife.
-
In swiftness and silence thro' vale and o'er hill,
Thro' strams and o'er logs and mid thickly twined bushes,
Her heart at each sound made in terror to thrill,
Her blood at each step being shed with a will,
Still hopefully on to the refuge she pushes
And finally bedraggled and bleeding and sore
Drops, faint with her load, at Fort Dickerson's door.
-
O, fearful her trial, but blessed her gain!
One night of distress worth an age of vain pleasures,
To her what she suffered so much to attain,
Were saved on that night when her neighbors were slain
Her husband and children, her dearest of treasures.
And such a grand woman and mother and wife
For that would be willing to suffer, thro' life.
-
O boundless the love that the mother-hearts hold
For those whom their God to their keeping has given!
Twas that that sustained this good mother of old
To watch and bear pain for the lambs of her fold
And saved them from death by the blessing of heaven.
O love, that God gives a woman's heart pure!
O God, what a woman for love can endure!
-
O, cherish the name of a woman so true,
Inspirited and sustained by so grand an emotion.
And right by the names of the heroes that do
Great things for their fellows there trace her name, too,
Her daring, her deeds, and her wondrous devotion:
A name that the praises of angels inspires,
The plain, simple name of good Margaret Byers. [Ref: CorsicaPA Standard

some land in Shelby Co KY. [Ref: Dedman SHANNON p3]

years. An affectionate husband, a tender parent, a useful citizen, a sincere
friend, and an exemplary Christian. For many years he filled with great
respectability the office of ruling elder in the congregation of Three Ridges.
From the Church militant below he has been translated to the Church triumphant
in heaven to dwell forever with his ___ and his God." followed by a bible
verse, and "Margaret Byers relick of Thomas Byers departed this life August
4th A.D. 1829 in the 63(?) year of her age. She was a loving companion, tender
parent, sincere friend and an exemplary Christian" [Ref: Borkowski
