no definite record of him prior to 1777, when he married his second wife, Ann
SHANNON [Ref: BrackenHB BRACKEN p80, Riggs THOM p34]
signed oath of allegiance June (or January) 1778. Brother-in-law, William
McGrew, also signed the oath of allegiance on the same date, and at the
same place - Lancaster, PA [Ref: BrackenHB BRACKEN p84]
Nov 1778 he moved from York County to Washington Co, then part of Westmoreland
Co, PA. With him at time of moving were his second wife, Ann, and her infant
son then six weeks old, and four children by his first wife, whose names we do
not know. [Ref: BrackenHB BRACKEN p80, Riggs THOM p34]
took up two tracts of land in Washington Co, one known as "Three Shares"
situated on Chartiers Creek near Canonsburg, the other known as "Logan Water"
on Raccoon Creek. Part of the Chartiers property, on which he resided, was
much later acquired by the state as the site of the Morganze Reform School
[Ref: Riggs THOM p34]
In Washington, PA, Old Survey Book 3, page 95, is a draft of a survey called
"Logan Water", situated on Raccoon Creek, in Washington County, PA, containing
157 acres and 42 perches and the usual allowance for roads, etc., executed Sep
28 1786, in pursuance of a warrant granted Thomas Bracken for 100 acres, dated
Sep 16 1785. On page 101, same book, a draft of a tract of land lying upon
the waters of Chartiers Creek, Washington County, PA, called the "Three
Shares", containing 340 acres strict measure, surveyed Apr 15 1788, in
pursuance of a certificate granted to Thomas Bracken by the Commissioners of
Virginia, sppointed to adjust claims to unpatented lands, in the counties of
Yohogania, Monongahelia, and Ohio. A Virginia certificate was granted for
this tract in 1780. A patent was not obtained until Mar 30 1802. [Ref:
