Research Notes:
attended the West Alexander Academy, taught for many years by Rev. John McCluskey D.D.; afterwards taught school at Blairsville and Johnstown PA, at Washington College 1835-6, at Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati OH 1836-7. His son writes that he has heard him say that when he went to Lane Seminary, he expected to find the young men studying for the ministry almost saints; his expectations in this regard were so sadly shattered that he gave up the idea of going into the ministry and studied law. In 1838 he was admitted to practice in Muhlenburg, KY; afterwards in IN, TN, KY, AR, and MS. In 1848 he moved to Indiana, married, and studied for the ministry. Was at New Albany Presbyterian Seminary 1851-2, licensed to preach by the Madison IN Presbytery, sent to Texas as a missionary and ordained by the Presbytery of Eastern Texas at Jefferson, that state, in 1852.
He came to the First Presbyterian Church, Houston, TX, in 1857. He was given largely to evangelical work and organized many churches, one of which was the First Church of Dallas, one of the largest in the state. [Ref: Eagleson BYERS p14]
