Educated at Jefferson College, Canonsburg, PA, became a member of the
Presbyterian Church when twenty one years of age [1806]. [Ref: Craig BYERS

1810 Census of Strabane Township, Washington County, page 527, shows White
Males: 1 under age 10, 1 age 16 but under 26; White Females: 1 age 16 but
under 26 [Ref: Craig BYERS p20]
Apr 5 1818: purchased from Thomas Byers Sr, for $200, giving a bond for $500,
a tract of land in Donegal Twp. Bond was never paid, and land reverted
back to Thomas Byers Sr [Ref: WashingtonCoPA Deeds 2O-38]
1820 Census of Donegal Township, Washington County, page 143-A, shows 2 white
males age 26 but under 45 (one engaged in agriculture), and 1 white female age
16 but under 26. The word "Dr." is with his name on the census schedule.
His first wife, Sarah BONOR died Apr 15 1817. Their children, William,
Thomas N, and John H, were living with their grandparents,

Oct 1 1821: sold to Thomas Byers Sr 118 acres and 90 perches of land in
Donegal Twp on Middle Wheeling Creek [Ref: WashingtonCoPA Deeds 2E-429]
In 1821 moved with family to Ohio. [Ref: Craig BYERS p21, Eagleson BYERS p6]
in Ohio, lived at Fredericktown, Knox County; at Piqua, Miami County; at
Bucyrus, Crawford County; and possibly at other locations [Ref: Craig BYERS

1830 Census Dr. Byers is on schedule for Fredericktown, Wayne Township, Knox
County, Ohio. In his household were only himself and a female, age 20 but
under 30. This must be Hannah Madded, his second wife. Where the three
sons were living in 1830 is unknown; possibly at school, possibly with

abt 1834: received 1/11 share in will of uncle, James Byers [Ref: Taylor BYERS
p23]
After moving to Ohio became a Methodist, and then a local preacher in that
denomination. [Ref: Craig BYERS p21, Eagleson BYERS p6]
1860 Census, Dr. Byers and third wife, Elizabeth Bolen, were living in
Bucyrus, Crawford County, OH, Dwelling #584, Household #599:
John BYERS - 74 - white male - Physician (Retired) - born, Pennsylvania
Elizabeth BYERS - 67 - white female - born, New York
Residing in the same dwelling in 1860 was the family of Rebecca McCLURE, age
39, white female, born in Virginia, and her seven children, the eldest of whom
was John McClure, a white male printer, age 10, born in Ohio. Connection with
Byers family unknown; perhaps one family was renting [Ref: Craig BYERS p22]
Still living in Ohio in December 1868, when third wife died. He then came to
Batesville, AR, to reside permanently with William, his only surviving son.

In 1869 he moved to Batesville, AR, where he died and was buried. [Ref:

1870 Census of Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, shows Dr. John Byers
in William's household (Dwelling #97, Household #104, Town of Batesville). On
the census schedule the birthplace of Dr. Byers is incorrectly listed as

Obituary appeared in Arkansas Gazette of August 8 1871, page 1, column 2:
The Batesville Republican of the 6th announces the death of Dr. John Byers,
the venerable father of Judge William Byers. The Republican furnishes the
following brief biography of Dr. Byers:
John Byers was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, July 22 1786. He
was educated at Jefferson College, Pennsylvania. he professed religion when
about twenty-one year of age and joined the Presbyterian Church. In 1821 he
moved to the State of Ohio, and there united with the Methodist Episcopal
Church, and was a local preacher for many years. He moved to this county two
years ago and died in this city at half-past one o'clock in the morning, July

This Indenture made this first of October one thousand eight hundred and
twenty one Between Dr. John Byers of Washington County and State of
Pennsylvania of the one part and Thomas Byers [Senior in heading] of the
County and State aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that the said John
Byers in and for the consideration of the sum of Seven hundred dollars to him
in hand paid by the said Thomas Byers at or before the sealing and delivery
hereof the receipt I do hereby acknowledge and do forever acquit and discharge
the said Thomas Byers his Executors and administrators, and by these presents
do grant bargain sell alien enfeoff release and confirm unto the said Thomas
Byers his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate
on the waters of Middle Wheeling in Washington County, bounded as follows,
viz, Beginning at a black oak in John Houck's line thence North eighty four
West eighty and 1/5 perches to a white oak thence South seventy one west
twenty four perches to a dogwood thence North seven and one fourth West One
hundred and 1/5 perches to a post thence North four and 1/4 East forty nine
perches to a white oak thence North thirty one and 3/4 East sixty eight
perches to a post in John Simmons line thence South sixty six and one fourth
East forty nine perches to a black oak thence South one degree West ninety
eight perches to a white oak thence South forty six degrees East one hundred
and three perches to a post at the beginning, Containing one hundred and
eighteen acres and ninety perches strict measure, together with all and
singular the buildings woods water courses rights liberties privileges
hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging, To Have and to hold the
said described tract of land with its appurtenances unto the said Thomas Byers
his heirs and assigns forever and the said John Byers doth hereby bind himself
his heirs executors and administrators by these presents to warrant and
forever defend the said described tract of land with the hereditaments to the
said Thomas Byers his heirs and assigns forever in the full and peaceable
possession of the said described herediatments and premises against the lawful
claim of all persons whatsoever. In Witness whereof the said John Byers hath
hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year above written. John Byers.
Sealed and delivered in the presence of James Ashbrook. John Wilson.
Received on the day of the date of the within Indenture the full
consideration money therein mentioned. John Byers.
Washington County SS. Personally came before me the subscriber one of the
Justices of the peace in and for said County John Byers and acknowledged that
he executed the within Indenture for the special purpose therein mentioned and
desired the same to be entered of record as such. In Testimony whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this fourth day of October A.D. 1821. John
