Physician [Ref: Eagleson BYERS p16, WashingtonPA Observer 12/7/1926]
GalltionOH Inquirer 3/17/1947:
Dr. Herbert W. Todd, a prominent physician and surgeon in Galion for 56
years, died at one o'clock this morning at Lee Memorial hospital in Fort
Myers, Fla., where he had undergone an abdominal operation a week ago
Saturday. He entered the hospital the Thursday before for observation. Dr.
Todd left Galion the latter part of January on a southern trip and had first
gone to Biloxi, Miss., and then to Boccogrande, Fla., near Fort Myers, where
he was staying when he was taken ill. His death followed a stroke.
Dr. Todd was born at Alliance, August 15, 1867, a son of William and
Charlotte Lawson Todd, natives of West Alexander, Pa. The family moved to
Crestline where Dr. Todd attended school, studied medicine under the late Dr.
W. P. Bennett and graduated in medicine from the Fort Wayne, Ind. medical
school in 1891, locating the same year in Galion in the practice of his
profession.
Outstanding in his profession Dr. Todd also took an active part in the
musical and industrial life of Galion. Coming from a musically talented
family, for many years he headed Todd's band, playing lead cornet and was
noted as a cornet soloist. Dr. Todd traveled extensively, having made several
world tours.
He had contributed largely to Galion's industrial growth with his
investments in starting a number of its factories. At the time of his death
he was a director of the First National Bank, the U.S. Steel Grave Vault
company, the Eagle Crusher company, and the Cartwright Asphalt Equipment
company. For a number of years he was president of the Schul Brothers company
of Crestline.
His first marriage was to Leo Long, of Angola, Ind., prominent as a singer,
who died November 5, 1911. His second marriage was on Dec. 31, 1919, to
Magdalena Elizabeth Knierim, superintendent of nurses at the Good Samaritan
hospital. Her death occurred January 2, 1945. He is survived by his sister,
Bessie Todd, well known music teacher. Three brothers, Clarence, Joseph, and
Harold are deceased.
Dr. Todd was a member of the Knights Templar at Mansfield, and a member of
the Galion Masonic bodies, both Blue Lodge and Chapter since 1895. He was
also a member of the Crawford county medical society and Galion Lodge 1191,
B.P.O.E.
He was also a member of the Ohio State Medical society and the American
Railway Surgeon's association having served as surgeon for the Erie railroad
for a number of years. His residence and office was at 125 North Market
Street.
The body will leave Fort Myers tonight accompanied by F. D. Weber who had
been called to Fort Myers when the doctor was first stricken. Funeral
arrangements in charge of the Snyder funeral home are incomplete, but it is
announced that Rev. R. R. Elliker, pastor of the First Reformed church, will
be in charge of the services and interment will be made in Fairview cemetery.
