Research Notes:
Count of Poitou [Ref: Burke Peerage cclii, Louda RoyalFamEurope #2, Paget
HRHCharles p11]
not listed as Count of Poitou in [Ref: Tapsell Dynasties p211]
after 1154: granted an extensive lordship in fifteen English counties by
his brother Henry II [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p989]
granted the vicomte of Dieppe in Normandy [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p990]
William wanted to marry the widow of King Stephen's son William (d. 1159) but
Archbishop Becket forbade the marriage because the two Williams were second
cousins. William Plantagenet supposedly died of grief because he could not
marry the object of his affections. William is sometimes stated to have had an
out-of-wedlock daughter, but the assertion rests on no reliable evidence
whatever. [Ref: John Carmi Parsons SGM 2/12/1999]
sought to marry Isabel de Warenne, Countess of Surrey, widow of his cousin,
William, Count of Boulogne and Mortain (son of King Stephen). The marriage was
opposed by Archbishop Becket on grounds of affinity (he and her former
husband being related in the 3rd degree of kindred). [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc
v1p22]
died unmarried [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p990]
