Research Notes:
17 Sep 964: first appears, in a grant of her husband Sygifridus to the
church of Saint-Pierre at Treves [Ref: HenryII hedwi000 4/5/2007]
between 24 Sep and Christmas 993: last known appearance [Ref: HenryII hedwi000
4/5/2007]
although a number of hypotheses have been advanced regarding Hedwig's
origin, none has been backed up by convincing evidence [Ref: HenryII hedwi000
4/5/2007]
Falsely attributed father: Giselbert, duke of Lorraine, d.939. But, this
would make the emperor Heinrich II, famous for his opposition to
consanguineous marriages, a second cousin of his wife [Ref: HenryII hedwi000
4/5/2007]
Falsely attributed father: Otto the Great, d.973, emperor. Must be rejected
for same reason as Giselbert, making Heinrich II and his wife second cousins
[Ref: HenryII hedwi000 4/5/2007]
Falsely attributed father: Eberhard IV, d.bef 966, count of Nordgau.
Conjecture based on the statement of a fabricated charter that Hedwig's
son Adalbero had duke Adalbert of Lorraine as an avunculus, added to various
conjectures about Adalbert's uncertain parentage. Another problem is that
Eberhard was evidently the husband of Sigefroid's sister Lietgarde [Ref:
HenryII hedwi000 4/5/2007]
Falsely attributed father: Giselbert, son of Wigeric. Would be possible
only if Sigefroid was not Gielbert's brother. However, the evidence
making Sigefroid a brother of Giselbert is strong, and this suggested
connection must be rejected [Ref: HenryII hedwi000 4/5/2007]
