Research Notes:
997 to 1003: appears in several charters of her son Robert [Ref: HenryII
adela002 7/26/2008]
1005: evidently deceased, when Robert gave donations for the souls of his
father Hugues and mother Adelaide [Ref: HenryII adela002 7/26/2008]
F. Lot proposed some years ago that Adelaide, wife of Hugh Capet, was from
Poitou/Aquitaine, but Constance Bouchard ("Consanguinity and Noble Marriages
in the Tenth and Eleventh Centuries," Speculum 56 (1981): 268- 287, note 17)
argues persuasively that there is no convincing primary evidence supporting
this and that there is good reason for believing that Adelaide was not related
to the dukes of Aquitaine, namely, the marriage of Hildegard of Burgundy
(great-granddaughter of Hugh and Adelaide) to William VI (VIII), Count of
Poitou, Duke of Aquitaine, a marriage which would have been consanguineous
within three degrees if Adelaide were the daughter of William I (III), Count
of Poitou, Duke of Aquitaine. [Ref: Don Stone SGM 3/12/1996-052739]
Christian Settipani in "La prehistoire des Capetiens" (1993), pp. 415-419,
discusses questions raised about the identity of Adelaide, wife of Hugh Capet.
He explicitly comments on Bouchard's article, "Patterns of women's names in
royal lineages, ninth-eleventh centuries," Medieval prosopography,
ix(1)(1988), pp. 1-32, as well as other objections by her and by others. He
concludes, I gather, the the objections are wanting, and that William I of
Poutou [III of Aquitaine] is Adelaide's father (as in ES ii, 76).
A relevant paragraph (without diacritics or footnotes) reads: "Pour en
On
I note that in his summary descent of the Robertiens, Table 11, he
lists Hugh Capet's wife as "Adelais d'Aquitaine."
I should appreciate an assessment by someone who can both read French
and weigh historical argument--skills in which I am sadly wanting.

Response from Jason Cruse (jcruse@nemonet.com) with translation:
"To come back to Adelais, the final "proof" of her [birth/relationship], is
perhaps contained in a diploma of Lothaire, which confirmed a donation, in
982, that she made to a monastery, the Trinity, in Poitiers. In this act,
it is stated that Adela, wife of Duke Eblo, cousin of the King, was the
daughter of the founder of the monsatery, Adela, who had made her donation
with the consent of her son, the Marquis Wilhelm. This act was not known
until 1377, when an editor corrected, naturally, Eblo, which has no
meaning, into Hugo. {trouble here in the first part, but my best guess, in
brackets} [If we can believe these records] then we have proof that
Adelais, wife of Hugh Capet, was the daughter of Wilhelm II of Aquitaine
and Adela of Normandy, and the sister of Wilhelm IV.
C, Bouchard objects to the correction of Eblo into Hugh, and the confusion
over the document which has for principal actors Eblo and Adela, parents of
Duke Wilhem III, who were, however, dead in 982.
The objections, however, are difficult to understand. The only duke of
Aquitaine whose wife was named Adela and whi had a son named Wilhelm, is
Wilhelm III, husband of Gerloc or Adela of Normandy (the second wife of
Ebalus was also named Adela, but was not the mother of Wilhelm III).
Moreover, it is difficult to see Ebalus could have been Lothaire's cousin.
His carolingian origins are so far removed that his only common ancester
with Lothaire could only be Charlemagne. In addition, the text
distinguishes between the spouse of Adel, entitled "duke" and the count of
Poitiers Wilhelm, entitled "marquis". Finally, contrary to what Bouchard
states, the text is perfectly clear, once the name adaptation is made.
Lothaire confirms the gift by Adela, wife of the cousin of Duke Hugo, to
the Trinity order founded by Adela, with the consent of her son, Marquis
Wilhelm." [Ref: Jason Cruse SGM 10/26/1997-105813]
The theory that Adelaide was a daughter of Guillaume I(III) Tete-d'Etoupe of
Poitou and Aquitaine was argued in the late nineteenth century by Ferdinand
Lot [Lot (1891), 358-361] and Rene Merlet [Merlet (1895), 247, 254-5], and
more recently by Christian Settipani [Settipani (1993), 415-9]. On the other
side, Constance Bouchard has been a vocal opponent of an origin of Adelaide in
Aquitaine [Bouchard (1981), 274, n. 17; Bouchard (1988), 17, n. 28; Bouchard
(2001), 111-4, 152-3]. The main pieces of evidence which have been seen as
bearing on the origin of Adelaide are the following:
The historian Richer of Reims, in a series of entries on the last page of
the manuscript of his history, describing events of 997, states that king
Robert besieged Hildebert in Aquitaine for the sake of his nepos Guillaume
["Rotbertus rex in Aquitania, ob nepotem suum Wilelmum obsidione Hildebertum
premit." Richer, MGH SS 3: 657].
A charter of Bourgueil of 1028x9 mentions Guillaume of Aquitaine as
a consobrinus of king Robert ["regnante rege Rotberto in Francia et ejus
consobrino Guillelmo in Aquitania" Richard (1903), 1: 199, n. 1, citing Besly,
preuves, 365 (the latter not seen by me)]. This charter was pointed out by
Alfred Richard, but has been generally overlooked in discussions about the
origin of Adelaide.
The Translatio sancti Maglorii, a previous work inserted in a chronicle ca.
1114, states that Adelaide, wife of Hugues Capet, was the daughter of a count
of Poitou, and a descendant of Charlemagne ["Quia[i.e., Hugues Capet] etiam
cum sua venerabili conjuge, Adelaide nomine, filia Pictavorum comitis, de
progenie Karoli magni imperatoris, ..." Translatio sancti Maglorii, v, in
Merlet (1895), 247; also ibid., 254].
Helgaud's life of king Robert II states that Robert was descended ab
Ausonia partibus, an apparent literary reference to Italian descent ["... fuit
rex Francorum Rotbertus origine natus nobilissima, patre illustri Hugone,
matre Adhelaide vocitata, quae adeo bene laudata tanti filii digna extitit
praerogativa. Ejus inclyta progenies, sicuti ipse suis sanctis et humillimis
asserebat verbis, ab Ausonia partibus descenderat." Helgaud, Vita Roberti
regis, RHF 10: 99].
A charter of king Lothair of France dated 982 mentions a duke Ebles and his
wife Adele, daughter of a marquis Guillaume ["... quoniam consobrini ducisque
nostri potentissimi Eblonis conjux illustrix, Adela vocabulo, nostram expetiit
serenitatem quatenus pro nostra conjugisque et prolis salute regni quoque
nostri statu coenobio noviter in Pictavia urbe ab inclita genetrice sua per
assensum marchionis Willelmi, sui videlicet filii" Rec. actes Lothair & Louis
V, 109 (#48)]. It has been argued that "Eblonis" (as it appears in all known
copies of the charter) should be emended to "Hugonis" and that this was a
reference to the future king Hugues Capet and his wife Adelaide (the names
Adelaide and Adele being easily confused) [ibid., 110, n. 1; Settipani (1993),
418-9]. If this theory is correct, it would confirm that Adelaide was a
daughter of Guillaume of Poitou and Aquitaine. Its notable weakness is that it
would require the emendation of a reading which appears in several copies of
the charter.
Robert II's contemporary, Bishop Adalbero of Laon, in a poem written to
Robert, states that his ancestors were kings and emperors for a long time and
that he had an imperial wetnurse (presumably a poetic reference to his mother)
["Patres namque tui longe : rex, induperator / Lac tibi suggenti dat nutrix
induperatrix; "Adalbero, Carmen ad Rotbertum regem, lines 7-8, Huckel (1901),
129-130; see also Settipani (1993), 415, n. 100].
The name Gisele borne by a daughter of Hugues Capet is seen by some as a
possible onomastic clue to the origins of Adelaide [e.g., Bouchard (1988), 17,
n. 28].
It has been suggested that a Poitou origin for Adelaide would explain the
relationship between king Louis VII of France and Eleanor of Aquitaine which
led to their divorce [Lot (1891), 360]. However, that relationship would be
too distant to be important, and a closer relationship is known anyway. Thus,
this item is irrelevant with regard to the question of Adelaide's parentage.
[Ref: HenryII adela002 7/26/2008]
The main strength of the theory making Adelaide a daughter of Guillaume I(III)
Tete-d'Etoupe of Poitou and Aquitaine is that it has three independent strands
of supporting evidence. The fact that one of these three items comes from a
not always reliable source (Translatio sancti Maglorii) is mitigated by
existence of the other two. The only evidence against this theory that has
much weight is the consanguinity argument, for Helgaud and Adalbero are both
so vague that even their relevance is not certain. The question here is
whether or not the negative evidence is enough to overrule the otherwise
reasonable positive evidence. The consanguinity argument still has the
reasonable explanation that consanguineous marriages slipped through the
system from time to time. In contrast, anyone wishing to argue against the
Poitevin connection of Adelaide is faced with explaining away
the nepos and consobrinus relationships either as the above step-nephew or
second cousin, one-removed relationships, or by making Adelaide a relative of
Guillaume III(V) in a way that denies the Poitevin connection (presumably via
a hypothetical Blois connection for which there is no evidence). Thus,
Adelaide was probably the daughter of duke Guillaume I(III) "Tete-d'Etoupe" of
Poitou and Aquitaine. [Ref: HenryII adela002 7/26/2008]
