Research Notes:
Started work for Pennsylvania RailRoad at age 13, lighting switch lamps. This involved carrying a lantern along the track to the siding switch, and lighting a lamp near it as a warning for the train engineer (and in morning extinguishing the light). Earned $4.40 per month. Later got additional job as ticket agent, earning $15.00 per month. Paid in cash at end of each month, when paymaster traincar came; waited in line twice, once for each job. Took home "3 five-dollar gold pieces, 4 silver dollars, a quarter, a dime, and a nickel." Later quit railroad to become a writer and went away to write book. Didn't work, and so back to railroad. Died just a few months short of 50 years of service to RR. [Ref: Harry Marshall 7/3/94]

Harry H Marshall Sr, 62, of 3520 French Street, movement director for the northern division of the Pennsylvania Railroad for the past 48 years died at his home early Saturday following a four month illness.
He is surived by his wife Mrs. Rue Marshall; two daughters, Lucille Denning and Mrs. John Huggler, both of Erie; a son, Harry H Marshall, Jr, of Pittsburgh
