Research Notes:
during high school lived for a while with Fannie Rubenstein Wilson. Also lived with Rose Rosby for a short time. [Ref: Rae Berman 5/5/96]

after High School, Uncle Joe made offer to pay college expenses for M.D. degree. Francis was awarded a scholarship for one year at Radcliffe. Family worried that Francis would not fit in or be dressed well enough to fit in with other girls at Radcliffe, so Rae bought her a complete wardrobe. Afterwards, family convinced her not to attend, and instead to attend the school of Nursins. That was a 3-year program, free tuition, and free housing. Attended with cousin Thelma Rubenstein, daughter of uncle Harry and Rose. [Ref: Rae Berman 5/5/96]

Ongraduation day from nursing school, Francis was called into the Supervisor's office. She (supv) was very dissapointed in Francis's performance, not that she did badly, but that she could have done much better had she applied herself. [Ref: Rae Berman 5/5/96]

Earned a schoolarship to Univercity of Chicago [to study ___]. Part of scholarship deal was to work out of Michael Reese Medical Center as a social worker. For that she travelled all over the city of Chicago, often into poorer neighborhoods. Obtained a good feeling for the actual living conditions of people in the inner city. During this social-worker perdiod, met Norman, who was a dentist at Michael Reese at that time. [Ref: Rae Berman 5/5/96]

After being married approx one year, she contributed $5K to a partnership that bought and managed a downtown office building, along with Uncle William Rubenstein and Rae. She attended all of the semmi-annual meetings of the directors of this group. Shortly after 1954 (when William Rubenstein died), the partnership decided to buy up several blocks of property around the building, and convert them into apartments. At the director's meeting where this was discussed, Francis made a big point of the facilities to be available in these apartments: hot and cold running water, sweres, bathtubs. This was from her experience as a social worker several years previously, and knowledge of how the people in that neighborhood lived. This was a large project, approx 10 blocks lng by 3 blocks wide. diagnosed with cancer approx 1959, treated by Dr. Wagner, oncologist at Michael Reese. several operations and radiation therapy. Approx 2 years from diagnosis until died. [Ref: Rae Berman 5/5/96]
