Salem for about one month, they founded a new settlement called Rogers'
Plantation, later changed name to Rowley [Ref: Campbell HASELTINE p3, Lapham

1641, 1648, and 1653: served on the Grand Jury [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p381]
1643: had a two-acre house lot in Rowley [Ref: Blodgette Rowley p142]
1649: moved westward to Merrimack river, first settlers in the present
town of Bradford. [Ref: Lapham HAZELTON p16]
1649: in consideration of certain grants of land in the new territory, Robert
and John Haseltine and William Wilde started clearing the land bordering the
Merrimack and erecting dwellings, and thereby became the first settlers in the
present town of Bradford. In consideration of these grants, the Haseltines
and Wilde were to look after the cattle belonging to the settlers while
grazing on the newly made meadows [Ref: Campbell HASELTINE p3]
1649: agreed to serve as the town's "herdsmen", by settling by some
excellent natural meadows near the river but too far from the town
center. Covenant of 1649 was imperfect, and renewed in 1652. Granted to
each of the three men (Robert and John Haseltine and William Wilde) forty
acres of upland, a commons for twenty head of cattle "which said commons
they shall hae liberty to fence in", twenty acres of meadow, a thousand
pipe staves yearly for seven years, permission to cut firewood for their
families and timber for building and fencing, freedom for seven years
from town taxes on their lands and houses, and on four oxen, six cows,
and four calves, and "liberty to keep swine." For their part, they agreed "to
look to the herd of cattle, that the towne of Rowley shall put into the
pasture during the time of seven years" for which they were also to receive
two shillings a day for time spend "looking to said pasture." Also the
settlers agreed "to provide convenient diet and lodging, at indifferent times,
to any that the towne shall send to keep any herd there." Thus they were
proprietors of the first inn at Bradford [Ref: Koehler HASELTINE p3-13]
1655: established a ferry between Bradford and Haverhill. Court order "Ye
court being informed yt there is no ferry across Marrimack river at Haverhill,
ye court orders Robert Haseltine to Keepe a ferry over said river, and to have
of strangers 4 pence if they pay presently and six pence if booked; and to
keepe entertainment for one year for horse and man unless ye court take
further orders." [Ref: Campbell HASELTINE p5, Koehler HASELTINE p3-14]
1655: ordered to keep a ferry across the Merrimack river at Haverhill: "Fees:
Strangers, 4 pence cash, six pence on book; townspeople 2 pence cash, four
pence on book." He was to provide entertainment for horse and man for one year
unless the General Court ordered otherwise [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p381]
1659: John Haseltine sued by George Hadley for fencing about forty or fifty
acres of his farm without giving satisfaction and won the case. Joseph Jewett
and Robert Heselton testified that George Hadley assented to the division of
land, 29 Mar 1659. Theophylus Shatswell deposed that he heard Robert Hasaldin
say that said Robert held not the land in controversy by the "marchants" last
laying out, it being divided by merchant Jewett but by an agreement he thought
his brother John & Goodman Hadley made an exchange of land. Old records are
not very clear about the case, but it is evident from the papers that have
survived that Robert held a piece of property that George Hadley claimed [Ref:
Holman PILLSBURY p381]
1662-4: overseer of highways and fences [Ref: Campbell HASELTINE p5]
Mar 28 1663: George Hadley sued Robert for tresspass for felling several
trees, and won his case. Daniel Bradley deposed that George Hadlye desired him
to go to Robert Haseltine with him and said Hadley demanded upon what
authority he had felled trees in his swamp. Haseltine answered it was his own
land. The evidence shows that Robert's land bordered on Hadley's, and it was
probably another case of overlapping boundaries. In June following Robert had
the case reviewed and this time he won, whereupon Hadley appealed the case to
the Court of Assistants. [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p381]
Sep 25 1665: served on Trial Jury [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p381]
Sep 1666: served on Grand Jury [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p382]
