probably a relative of Henry DOW, may have been born earlier than 1615,
perhaps as early as 1601 [Ref: Hoyt S&A p744]
antecedents of Henry DOW, being known, searchers began by assuming the two
were brothers or near relatives. Nothing found. Henry had a brother Thomas
14 years too old; this Thomas had a family and died on his inherited property
in Runham, England. Henry DOW had more than average education; Thomas the
emigrant could not read. For five years Henry and Thomas lived in adjoining
towns and for ten years thereafter they were but 15 miles apart; without the
slightest evidence that one knew of the existance of the other [Ref: DowRP DOW
p545]
Jun 22 1642: freeman of Newbury [Ref: DowRP DOW p545, Holman PILLSBURY p255,

Nov 10 1653: Richard Ormsby of Haverhill, to Thomas Dow of Newbury, house
and house lot containing 4 acres more or less, with all appurtenances and
accomodations, for 250 pounds, ten shillings, to be paid as appears by a bill
of sale which Thomas Dow have under his hand. [Ref: DowRP DOW p548]

eldest son, John (the one who received all his real estate) died in 1673,
leaving a widow Mary (who married later Samuel Shepard) and a son Joseph.
Joseph died a minor without issue, whereupon his share of his father's estate
reverted to his father's brothers, or their heirs, according to the law of the
time. They tried to recover, and later deeds show that they were successful.

Sep 25 1697: Stephen Dow of Haverhill the only son of Thomas Dow of Haverell
desireth administration of som estat in lands which was his fathers and after
him was my elder brothers John Dows, deceased, and after the decease of Joseph
the son of John Dow who deceased under age [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p257]
Nov 21 1694: Petition of Samuel Dow, attorney to his father Stephen Dow,
and of Ephraim Roberts, attorney to Henry Dow, showing that John Dow, late of
Haverhill, died intestate, leaving a considerable estate, which was divided in
1673, one half to Mary the widow and administratix, and the other half to his
son Joseph, who died before he came of age, asking that a citation may be
granted for the said administratix to give an accounting of her administration
so that the rightful heirs may receive the same. [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p257]
Jan 1 1694/5: Samuel Dow, son of Stephen Dow, again petitioned setting
forth the facts in the preceeding petition and adding "yet notwithstanding,
Mary Shepard, alias Dow doth keep the estate that was set out to Joseph and
with holdeth it from those to whom of right it belongeth, wherefore your
petitioner prays that the said Mary Shepard and Samuel Shepard her present
husband may be cited to give an account of ye estate so that the estate set
out to Joseph may be made certain unto whom it belongs." A citation was then
granted for Samuel and Mary Shepard to appear in Court the first Monday in
