often been wrongly described both as Earl of Carlisle and Earl of Cumberland, which county he is said to have exchanged with the King for that of Chester. [Ref: CP III p30]

old belief was that the Conqueror conferred the Earldom of Cumberland or Carlisle on Randulf le Meschin in 1072. Corrected in 1847 [Ref: CP III p30(a)]

gave Gilsland to his brother William at the start of the twelfth century; he failed to hold the land [Ref: Sanders Baronies p124]
