Research Notes:
1st Earl of Lincoln, of Earldom cr 1147 [Ref: CP VII p672]
Earl of Lincoln [Ref: CP IX p120, Richardson RoyalAnc v3p60]
of Folkingham, Lincolnshire, Stanton (in Fen Stanton), Huntingdonshire,
Burley, Rutland, etc [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v3p60]
heir of his father [Ref: CP VII p672, Richardson RoyalAnc v3p60]
inherited Barony of Folkingham from father [Ref: Sanders Baronies p46]
a charter of Walter de Gant, his wife and his heir for Bardney Abbey must
be dated between 1114 and 1120, as it refers to Ralph, Archbishop of
Canterbury, and Walter's lord, Richard (Earl of Chester). If Gilbert is
the heir referred to, he must have been born rather earlier than 1120 [Ref:
CP++(proposed) Lincoln 8/23/2003 (CP VII p672)]
fought at battle of Lincoln in Feb 1140/1 on side of Stephen, and was taken
prisoner by Ranulph II Earl of Chester, who compelled him to marry his niece
[Ref: CP VII p672]
1147-48: Earl of Lincoln under King Stephen [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p471]
abt 1147-8: created Earl of Lincoln, even though William de Roumare had been
created Earl of Lincoln in 1141 and still held that title [Ref: CP VII p672]
1148: as Earl of Lincoln, founded Rufford Abbey, Notts. [Ref: CP VII p672,
Keats-Rohan DD p471]
made a grant to Bridlington for the soul of his brother Baldwin attested by
Geoffrey and Robert de Gant, Philip de Kyme his dapifer, and Herbert fitz
Alard his constable [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p471]
VCH Lancs. 1:361 does indeed state that Gilbert was son of Roger fitz Reinfrid
by a first wife, Roheise or Hawise, daughter of William de Romare, and widow
of Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln, citing Farrer's Lancaster Pipe Rolls,
395-6, and Meyers, Guillaume le Marechal, 2:338.
The Farrer citation says nothing about Gilbert's mother. It is the charter
by which the king granted the marriage of William de Lancaster's daughter to
Gilbert, so I guess Meyer must be the source of the erroneous statement,
though I am not certain if it originated there. [Ref: Paul Reed SGM
