abt 1050: along with his brother Robert were immortalized by their decision to found a monastery; the site chosen being unsuitable, they followed the advice of their uncle and decided to refound the ancient abbey of Saint-Evroul. The monk and historian of Saint-Evroult, Orderic Vitalis, tells uso fthe generous endowment of the abbey by the brothers and their maternal kin [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p262]

1061: being falsely accused by Mabel of Belleme, wife of Roger de Montgomery, in the wake of a rebellion by Robert fitz Giroie, Hugh and Robert, among others of their maternal kin, were exiled [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p262]

before 1086: after death of Ralph Taillebois (with whom Hugh had exchanged several manors in Bedfordshire which were part of his wife's dower lands), Hugh disputed Ralph's inheritance with Hugh de Beauchamp, Ralph's son-in-law and principal heir, and the husband of Ralph's niece, Ranulf brother of Ilger [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p263]

1086: castellan and sheriff of Leicestershire, where he held 67 manors. Also held extensive property in Nottinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, and Suffolk. Several of his Norman vassals held these lands from him, including Hugh and Robert Burdet, Osbert de Neufmarche and Walter de Beaumais [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p262]

Domesday lord of extensive lands in the midlands and of much of the town of Leicester [Ref: Sanders Baronies p61]

1087-8: although he supported Robert Curthose against William II, he retained his offices under the new king [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p263]

Jan 1091: in Normandy, assisting Robert de Courcy in a dispute with Robert de Belleme, son of Mabel. This action provoked conflict with Roubert Curthose, duke of Normandy, but matters were resolved by the appearance of William II in Normandy [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p263]

died a few days after becomming a monk of Saint-Evroult, whose habit had previously been sent to him for the purpose [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p263]
