1190: apparently out of the country, as his younger brother, Richard, proffered 300m for the lands of the Barony of Clifford [Ref: Sanders Baronies p35(7)]

1199: proffered 300m to be confirmed in possession of Corfham, Salop, and other lands (including Barony of Clifford) [Ref: Sanders Baronies p35]

these lands had been confirmed to his younger brother, Richard, in 1190, probably when Walter was out of the country. Richard was with King John in France in 1198, and Walter may have obtained the lands due to Richard's death or for other reasons [Ref: Sanders Baronies p35(7)]

charged 100 pounds relief for the Barony of Clifford; petitioned the crown against this and an inquisition found that "tneuit de rege incapite per feudum militis et non per baroniam" Relief was reduced to 6 pounds 13s 4d [Ref: Sanders Baronies p36(1)]
