Lord of Petworth, Sussex, castellan of Arundel [Ref: Weis AR7 #161]
identified in records as 'Goscelin frater Regine' [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p989]
accompanied his sister to England [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p989]
Old peerage books knew all about the family. The family descended from
Joscelin, brother of Queen Adeliza de Louvain, second wife of King Henry I
and, through her second husband, William d'Aubigny, the Pincerna (m. ca
1138),the ancestress of the later Earls of Arundel. Consequently, Joscelin
was a son of Godfrey the Bearded, Count of Louvain and Duke of Lower Lorraine
(d. 1139). Joscelin married Agnes, daughter of William de Percy of Topcliff
and sister and co-heiress of William de Percy, who died s.p. about 1174. We
are informed that upon this marriage Joscelin was given the choice of giving
up either his name or his arms and that he chose to give up the former,
becoming known as Joscelin de Percy, but that he retained the ancient arms of
Brabant, i.e. "sable a lion rampart gold," to denote difference. This story
is a strange mixture of sound fact and the wildest fiction, but it has been
frequently repeated by amateurs in feudal genealogy [Ref: Moriarty Percy p39]
1140-1150: received gift of Petworth, and Henry II confirmed the gift
soon after his accession in 1154 [Ref: Moriarty Percy p40]
granted the honour of Petworth, Sussex, by William d'Aubigny, second husband
of his sister Adeliza [Ref: Sanders Baronies p148(4)]
Queen undoubtedly arranged for his marriage with Agnes de Percy [Ref: Moriarty
Percy p40]
assumed the name of PERCY [Ref: Holloway WENTWORTH p21]
brother-in-law of King Henry I [Ref: Holloway WENTWORTH p21]
