the description of John as one-eued (monoculus) (CP VII p677) comes from Dugdale's Baronage, citing Glover's collections, but according to contemporary sources it was his son Eustace who was one-eyed [Ref: CP++ Lincoln 6/22/2003 (CP VII p677)]

called John de Burgo, Monoculus, from having lost an eye [Ref: Foss Judges p262]

about 1076: suddenly claimed and seized the mill of Vains (from brother Waleran), but after a trial before the King's Court judgement was delivered against him. [Ref: CP XII/2 p269]

1086: holder of a minor tenancy-in-chief in East Anglia [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p284]

1086: Domesday tenant in Essex [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p919]

1086: described as John nepos Waleran, he was a tenant-in-chief in Norfolk, his estates including the manor of Saxlingham, to which the church was appurtenant, and as John nepos Walerami, he held also the single manor of Elsenham in Essex in chief, and a carucate and a half at Saxlingham. [Ref: CP XII/2 p269]

1086: (nephew of Waleran) held lands in Essex, and Norfolk, including Elsenham, Essex, and Saxlingham, Norfolk [Ref: CP XII/2 AppB p9]

is said to have been given the advowson of Hockham, Norfolk, by Roger BIGOD (d 1107) [Ref: CP XII/2 p269]
