before 1146: succeeded his father as baron of Rayleigh [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p449]

1140: witnessed a charter by King Stephen [Ref: Sanders Baronies p139(1)]

before 1152: received the Barony of Haughley [Ref: Sanders Baronies p121]

before 1154: referring to Hugh de Montfort as his "antecessor", inherited Hugh's honour of Haughley [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p265]

succeeded to the barony of Haughley, on the death without issue of Adeline de Montfort. He was a descendant of Hugh I de Montfort, as one of his charters makes clear [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p450]

1163: accused of treason, and was defeated in trial by battle; his lands went to the crown [Ref: Sanders Baronies p121, Sanders Baronies p139]

1163: defeated in trial by battle, and retired to Reading as a monk. His lordship of Rayleigh was forfeit with his defeat in battle [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p450]
