Baron of Cottingham [Ref: Sanders Baronies p37]
Lord of Liddle Strength [Ref: Sanders Baronies p59]
of Cottingham, Yorkshire, Liddel, Cumberland, Kettleby Thorpe and Bigby,
Lincolnshire, etc [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v3p64]
of Liddle, Cumberland [Ref: Rosie Bevan SGM 7/31/2002-221605]
inherited Barony of Cottingham from nephew [Ref: Sanders Baronies p37]
1174: in possessio of Liddel, Cumberland, when the castle was captured by
William the Lion [Ref: Farrer EYC v9p13, Rosie Bevan SGM 7/31/2002-221605]
1174: in possession of Barony of Liddle Strength. Ranulph le Meschin, lord of
Carlisle, granted Liddel to Turgis I Brundos some time before 1121. Turgis I
was followed, before 1130, by William, also called William de Rosedale, who
had a son Turgis II living during the reign of Henry II. There is no evidence
of a vconnection between the Rosedale family and the Stutevilles of
Cottingham, Yorks, and no reason can be given for the fact that Nicholas I de
Stuteville was in possession of Liddel in 1174. [Ref: Sanders Baronies p129]
1205: succeeded his nephew Robert [Ref: Rosie Bevan SGM 7/31/2002-221605]
before 5 Aug 1205: made a fine of 10,000 marks for having his inheritance of
all the lands held by William de Stuteville his brother; the fine included
2100 marks owed by William to the king. The fine was never paid, and
Knaresborough and Boroughbridge passed from the Stuteville family [Ref: Farrer
EYC v9p13, Rosie Bevan SGM 7/31/2002-221605]
1205: as heir of his nephew Robert, proffered 10000m to obtain the estates of
Knaresborough, subject to the condition that the castle of Knaresborough
should remain in the king's hands until the fine was paid. The fine was never
paid, and the honour remained in the king's control [Ref: Sanders Baronies
p59]
Easter 1215: one of the confederate barons who met at Stamford, and one
of those who were excommunicated by the pope on 16 Dec [Ref: Farrer EYC v9p15]
May 1217: captured at the battle of Lincoln and died soon afterwards [Ref:
