Research Notes:
Lord of Tynedale [Ref: Paget HRHCharles p182]
of Northallerton [Ref: John Ravilious SGM 6/11/2007-142226]
The traditional origin of the Comyns given by Sir Robert Douglas and other
writers, and followed in this article, seems open to serious question. All
that can safely be said is probably this: the first of the family known in
Scotland was William the Chancellor. He had three nephews, sons of a brother
whose name is uncertain: (1) William, killed c1144, (2) Richard, who acquired
the castle and honour of Northallerton as part of the settlement of his
uncle's claims to the Bishopric of Durham, and (3) Walter. [Ref: SP I p504
(with corr in IX p30)]
identified as "Richard Comyn of Northallerton and Badenoch (son of William,
son of John, son of Robert)" citing SP I 504-555. [WTM: consider this deleted
by SP IX p30 too] [Ref: Weis AR7 #121A]
heir of his brother William [Ref: John Ravilious SGM 6/11/2007-142226]
first appears in records of the chronicler John of Hexham, who continued the
chronicle of Symeon of Durham, who introduces Richard Cumin as follows:
Mediante ergo Willelmo archiepiscopo, Willelmus episcopus et Willelmus Cumin
convenerunt in foedus pacis ut Ricardus Cumin teneret de episcopo Alvertun et
totum illum honorem, caetera de integro resignerantur in manu episcopi. Erat
autem iste Ricardus nepos Willelmi Cumin, frater illius Willelmi defuncti.
[Ref: Round Comyn p108]
acquired the castle and honour of Northallerton as part of the settlement
of his uncle's claims to the Bishopric of Durham [Ref: SP I p504 (with corr in
IX p30)]
