The William fitz John who maried Denise daughter of Geoffrey I de Mandeville of Marshwood and became lord of Harptree in Somerset was identified by Eyton with William, brother of Eustache and Payn, sons of John fitz Richard, nephew of Waleran. Though the identification is accepted here, there must be some doubt about its accuracy. [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p920]

1138: held Harptree Castle, Somerset, against Stephen [Ref: CP XII/2 p270(d)]

1138: amongst those who revolted in support of the Empress Matilda [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p920]

1166: returned a Carta [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p854]

1166: said that he held 13 3/4 knights' fees of the king, and 1 fee of the honour of Mortain in Harptree [Ref: Sanders Baronies p42(3)]

1166: held ten fees of William earl of Gloucester of the Honour of Harptree (including Wonford in Devon) [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p920]

1166: also held 13.5 fees in chief which had been part of the honour of Bampton in Devon, as well as fees held of the bishop of Bath and Glastonbury abbey. [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p920]

hostage for Earl William in the latter's treaty with Roger earl of Hereford, appearing as William fitz John de Molariis [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p920]

granted land at Lion-sur-Mer to the abbey of Troarn; also gave Troarn's cell Bruton priory the advowson of the church of St Mary at Magneville [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p920]

heir was his son Henry de Tilly, whose inheritance was challenged in 1194 by Geoffrey de Manneville; Henry's defection to the French in 1205 solved the problem [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p920]
