PlainviewMN News 10/24/1902:
After months of intense suffering from cancer, Joseph W. Marshall passed
away from this life on Sunday, October 19.
Mr. Marshall was one of the early settlers of this county, having maintained
a continuous residence here for over forty-five years, and was widely known as
a farmer and stock buyer. He was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania,
October 5, 1831; was married to Miss Elizabeth Cram, April 6, 1857, and came
to Minnesota the same spring, locating in the township of Elgin, where a
family of sixteen children were born to them, all of whom, with the mother,
survive him, except the eldest son, Murray.
Mr. Marshall was a man of strong constitution and had always led an active
life and until the development of the fatal malady, he was considered a
pattern of physical life and vigor. He was kind hearted, a good neighbor and
a respected citizen. He has had the sympathy of a large circle of friends in
this long affliction and many genuine tears of sorrow will be shed over the
grave of our friend and fellow citizen.
The funeral was conducted form the residence on High Street Tuesday
afternoon by the Masonic Lodge of this place. Religious services by Rev. W.
D. King of Eyota. A large number of friends and former neighbors were in
attendance. [Ref: PlainviewMN News 10/24/1902]
Obituary:
Joseph W Marshall was born on a farm in Crawford County, Pennsylvania
October 5, 1831. He spent most of his younger days on a farm, being left an
orphan at an early age he made his home with an uncle but has always earned
his own way through life. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Cram,
April 6, 1857, and in the same spring came west in the company of F.L.Meachum,
and locating his home on a claim in section 3, in the town of Elgin. He was
identified with the early pioneers of this vicinity, he having broken nearly
all the land in and around this village, devoting 2 seasons to the work alone.
In this work he drove 4 yokes of oxen, which at that time were the beasts of
burden. After a few years he purchased the 240 acre farm, now known as the
Marshall farm, where he resided until the spring of 1889 when he moved to
Plainview. For many years he was extensively engaged in the dairy and stock
raising business and was known as one of the most prosperous farmers and stock
raisers of Wabasha county. In 1878 he began buying stock and has since been
largely engaged in that business. Besides a devoted wife he had 8 duaghters:
Mrs Cloe A Holtzer, Mrs. Alice I Meachum, Mrs Ever E Evans, Mrs Hattie
Richmond, Mrs Grace DeBar, Mrs Maud E Mack, Mrs Mary Smith, Miss Floss; and
seven (living) sons Otis H, Abel A, Elmer, Olney, Layton, Arthur and Charley
and two sisters Mrs Mary Carroll of this place and Mrs Sarah Johnson (1/2
sister) of Pennsylvania to mourn his loss. [Ref: Rita Meistrell 4/24/2004]
