PlainviewMN News 2/20/1925
Mrs E. E. Marshall, one of Plainviews oldest pioneer residents, passed away
at her home here at seven o'clock Monday monring. For the past few weeks she
has been confined with heart and kidney trouble, the end coming with a heart
attack. Mrs. Marshall had reached the age of eighty-five years five months
and one day. She came to this community in 1857 and has since made her home
here, living here continuously for sixty-eight years. When she came here with
her husband shortly after their marriage they settled on a farm west of
Plainview in Elgin township now known as the Gregor farm. At that time an
Indian trail ran within one-half mile of the house. The trail was continually
in use by the Indians in passing to and from the river. After a few years
they purchased the farm now owned by J. A. Simon which is even yet
occasionally referred to as ....[paper clipped]
Elizabeth E Cram was born in Crawford county, Pennsylvania. September 15,
1839. She grew to womanhood there and on April 6, 1857, she was united in
marriage to Joseph W. Marshall at Linesville, Pa. That spring they came to
Minnesota where their life was spent.
Mrs Marshall was the mother of one of the largest families in Wabasha
county, sixteen children, eight sons and eight daughters. All but one of
these survive. A son, Murray, died March 12, 1894. Mr. Marshall died October
19, 1902. She has one hundred direct descendents living, fifteen children,
fourty granchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, and two great great
grandchildren, representing five generations. The children who survive are
Mrs. Cloe A Holzer, Plainview; Otis, Bellingham, Wash.; Abel, Plainview; Mrs.
Alice I Meachum, San Diego, California; Mrs. Ever E Evans, Rochester; Elmer,
Rochester; Olney, Wall, S. D.; Mrs. Harriet Richmond, Plainview; Mrs. Grace
DeBar, Waseca; Mrs. Maud E Mack, Plainview; Mrs. Mary Smith, Plainview;
Layton, Pasadena, Calif.; Arthur, Mellette, S.D.; Charlie, Centerville, S.D.;
Mrs. Floss Melody, Des Moines, Iowa.
With so large a family Mrs. Marshall's home life was a busy one. She was
greatly interested in people and tho her family held first demand she welcomed
associations with neighbors and friends. As the infirmities of old age
gradually confined her activities her greatest pleasure was int he visits of
her family and friends, letters and photographs. Her interest in people was
manifest in the keenness with which she kept track of events in the lives of
her friends and ever growing family. her passing has brought sorrow, yet her
extreme age, the record of a well spent life seems to add a referential
timelyness to her passing and the sadness is somewhat relieved in the fullness
of her life.
Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Ardel
Look conducting the service. The remains were laid to rest in Greenwood
cemetery beside those of her husband.
Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H.L.Evans, Mr.
and Mrs. Elmer Marshall, Miss Mattie Holzer of Rochester, Arthur Marshall of
Mellotte, S.D., Mrs. W.R. Peyton of Grand Meadow, Mrs. Will Melody of Des
Moines, Iowa, Charley marshall of Centerville, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. James DeBar
