letter from Vade, dated Jan 20, 1839:
Dear Marshall:
Am sending you a small package containing a bible which your mother's grandfather cut from a piece of pipestone for his mother when he was a little boy. Grandma Elizabeth Marshall gave it to me before she passed away February 16, 1925. She was your great-great-grandmother. When she and Grandpa Joseph Marshall first came to Minnesota from Pennsylvania about the year 1855 there was quite a little pipestone there and my father made this little bible with his knife for my grandma. Pipestone is a very soft stone and easily whittled.
When your Uncle Alvin's first baby was born we had five generations living in our family. Grandma Elizabeth was still living at that time.
My how I used to like to go to her house for supper on Sunday nights. She always had corn meal much and milk for supper on Sunday. Her full name was Harriet Elizabeth Ealy Cram before she married grandpa Joseph Marshall. Everyone called her Aunt "Lib", she had 16 children, eight boys and eight girls. We used to have a picture of the whole family of 18, she and grandpa drove oxen hitched to a covered wagon from Pennsylvania to Minnesota and Grandpa used oxen for some time to plow and do his work on their homestead. A cousin of mine Ella Holze-Simons and her husband now live on that farm. They have a nice new house there. When I was about four years old we lived there in the same old house Grandma and Grandpa lived in. Can remember lots of things that happened while we lived there. Uncle Olney and Uncle Elmer lived with us then and helped my father on the farm. Were 320 acres in the farm then.
Can remember that your grandpa and I were both very much afraid of the dark so we stayed pretty close together. One of his jobs was to have fresh water in the house when evening came and we had to go away up on a hill back of the house to the wind mill to get it. Each one of us had a small pail to get water in. We sure used to hate to go up there after dark. Sometimes Dad would go part way and wait there for us. Guess he must have known we were afraid.
