Jacob Harpster (also Harbster, Herbster) served in Fourth Battalion, first
Company, Capt John Clark, first Lt Henry Pontius, Northumberland Co, PA
Militia, Col Philip Cole. Private Jacob Harpster enlisted Sep 26 1776. A
similar roll in Linn's History of the Buffalo Valley is found. This battalion
went into service in December. Capt Clark's company did not leave Reading
until Jan 3, 1777, and so was not in the Battle of Trenton or that of
Princeton, but was in subsequent skirmishes. It was attached to Col Potter's
second battalion. Jacob Harpster's name appears on two rolls from
Northumberland Co, PA, entitled to depreciation pay. His name, also, appears
on list of Revolutionary soldiers of the Continental Line. A list of
Revolutionary soldiers, made from a pay roll for years from 1778-1785 who were
noted chiefly for service on the Frontier, names credited by counties,
contains thename of Jacob Harpster in George Overmeier's Company,
Northumberland Co, PA, Militia. Matthew Wilson's Company list contains the
names of Jacob Harpster and, also, those of David and John.
Return of the Militia Officers of the County of Northumberland presented to
the Governor by Bernard Hubley, Esquire, Brigate Inspector of said County,
Friday, Feb 28, 1794, third Regiment, first ompany, Casper Wanamacher,
Captain, Lt Jacob Herpster. Again on May 22, 1798. Names of officers of
Militia, Northumberland Co, that have been elected and drawn for rank, third
Regiment Lt Col Frederick Evans, Capt Casper Wannamacker, Lt Jacob Harpster.

To the Honourable Judges of the inferior Court of General Quarter Sessions
of the peace held at Sunbury in and for the County of Northumberland to your
Honours Greeting, &c.
The memorial and petition of the inhabitants and subscribers of Beaver
Township most respectfully sheweth the many difficulties and grievances that
they are labouring under for want of a district and order from your honours to
have the privilege to Elect a magistrate in our own township as your
petitioners would observe that they have from 12 to 28 miles to the Nearest
Justice to attend Even so frivilous a cause which Renders it very Difficult
and Expensive, therefore, your petitions would Prefer their grieveances to
your honours praying to be relieved by the Earliest Opportunity, and attach us
to the above Request and your petitioners in Duty Bound will ever pray, &c.

May Term 1837; Jacob Harpster, decd, Petition for Inquest. A petition was
presented in the words following, to wit To the Honorable the Judges of the
Orphan Court of the County of Union held at New Berlin in and for said County
the sixteenth day of May 1837. The petition of Jacob Herbster son and heir at
law of Jacob Herbster late of Beaver Township deceased, humbly showeth that
your petitioner's said father died intestate about the year anno Domini
eighteen hundred and thirty two, leaving a widow who hath also since died and
issue twelve children to wit, Peter, Frederick, who was intermarried with
Susan Thomas but hath since died leaving issue eight children to wit, George,
David, Jacob, John, Eve, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Polly Herbster; Barbara
intermarried with John Hoffman; Sally intermarried with George Hoffman; David,
Eve, who was intermarried with Peter Kepler but hath also since died leaving
issue four children, to wit, Leonard, Hyram, Lucinda, and Sally Kepler; Jacob
your petitioner, John who was intermarried with Peggy Traister but hath also
since died leaving issue five children, to wit, Solomon, Peter, Philip,
Catherine, and Polly; George, Philip, Anthony, Elizabeth intermarried with
John Lawer; and that the said intestate died seized in his demesnes of fee of
and in a certain messuage plantation and tract of land situate in the township
and County aforesaid bounded by lands of Henry Rouch, Donald Stainingetr,
Jacob Hornby and others, and containing about one hundred and twenty seven
acres should the same be more or less with the appurtenances. Your petitioner
therefore prays your honour to award an inquest to make partition of the
premises aforesaid, to and among the children and representatives of the said
intestate in such manner and in such proportions as by the laws of this
commonwealth is demanded if such partition can be made without prejudice to or
spoiling of the whole, but if such partition cannot be thereof as aforesaid
then to value and appraise the same. And further to inquire and ascertain
whether the said real estate with the appurtenances will conveniently
accommodate more than one of the children of the said intestate, and if so how
many of the said children it will conveniently accommodate. And make report
of their proceedings to the next general Orphans Court, and he will pray.
Whereupon May 17 1837 the said petition being read and heard the prayer of the
