22 Jan 1153: elected Bishop of Durham, but refused by Archbishop of York because of his age and that he had three illegitimate sons by as many mothers. Applied to pope, but death of pope and archbishop put an end to the objections; he obtained consecration from succeeding pontiff on 20 Dec 1153 [Ref: Foss Judges p542]

On King's return to England, two days after his second Coronation at Winchester (17 Apr 1194), the Bishop is said to have voluntarily surrendered the Earldom, and the King to have charged him to deliver it to Hugh Bardolf [Ref: CP IX p707]
