since Symson's day (Symson, David, Historiographer Royal for Scotland, A Genealogical and Historical Account of the Illustrious Name of Stuart, from the First Original, to the Accession to the Imperial Crown of Scotland, Edinburgh (1712), cited by MacEwen on p391 note 5), Sir James has been credited with a son "Sir John", said to have been slain at Dundalk in 1318. If there was such a son, he must have been illegitimate [Ref: MacEwen Steward p396]
