King's Marshal [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v4p33]

first known holder of the office of Marshal of England. It was his duty to keep accounts, by means of tallies, of payments made out of the Treasury and Chamber, and other disbursements. In times of war the Constables and the Marshal also exercised military functions, the former apparently acting as Quartermaster-General and the latter as their assistant. [Ref: CP X AppG p92]

possibly identical with Gilbert "Gibard", a Domesday subtenant in Winterbourne Monkton (where the younger John the Marshal was apparently his successor in 1173) [Ref: CP++(proposed) Marshal 3/2/2003 (CP X AppG p92)]
