Research Notes:
Lord of Hedingham [Ref: Sanders Baronies p52]
probably came from Vair in Ancenis, in the Nantais [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p131]
abt 1050: appears in a charter given by Conan II [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p131]
usually assumed to have originated at Ver, because he held land in 1086 of the
Bishop of Coutances. Loyd acknowledged that no later evidence established any
connection between Aubrey's family and Ver in the Cotentin. There is a real
possibility that other de Ver families in England could have originated in the
Cotentin, but the mass of evidence indicating Aubrey's Breton origins is
overwhelming [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p131]
1086: Domesday tenant of the powerful Breton tenant-in-chief Count Alan Rufus,
and also a tenant-in-chief of his own fees [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p131]
Domesday Lord of Hedingham [Ref: Sanders Baronies p52]
founded the priory of Hatfield Broadoak, as a cell of Saint-Melaine de
Rennes, one of the most important Breton abbeys; although a cult of Saint
Melaine existed outside Brittany, it never reached the Cotentin peninsula
[Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p131]
Count [Ref: Holloway WENTWORTH p26]
Sheriff of Berkshire [Ref: Holloway WENTWORTH p26]
Chamberlain [Ref: Holloway WENTWORTH p26]
before 1100: possibly more often in Brittany, as he was of little note in
England [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p132]
attested a charter of Count Alan's brother Count Geoffrey Boterel as
Alberic Aper [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p132]
active in Berkshire in the early years of Henry I's reign, he was either
or possibly both a justiciar or sheriff [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p132]
