Feb 5 1283/4: one of the Nobles who acknowledged Margaret, Maid of
Norway, as their Soverign. [Ref: CP I p306]
Mar 11 1285/6: there is a "Royal assent to the marriage of John de Asceles
with one of the daughters of William de Sules" (Soulis). This entry
apparently referres to Earl John, but no evidence of the marriage taking place
[Ref: CP I p306(b)]
1292: sword fealty to Edward I, but fought on the side of the Scots in
the defeat at Dunbar, Apr 29 1296, and was taken prisoner to London. The
order for his release from the tower was dated Jul 31 1297. [Ref: CP I p306]
staunch adherent of Bruce, at whose coronation he assisted Mar 27 1306.
In the English invasion of Scotland that followed, he was taken prisoner
to London, and executed Nov 7 1306, his body burnt and his head fixed on
