District of Allerdale above Derwent, also called Copeland, which formed the barony of which Egremont was the caput, was granted by Henry I to William when he failed to hold Gilsland which he had received from his brother Ranulph [Ref: Sanders Baronies p115]

built the castle at Egremont [Ref: Sanders Baronies p115]

at start of twelfth century, received Gilsland from his brother Ranulph, but was unable to hold it; Gille son of Beieth, a Scottish lord, held the estates during the reign of Henry I, and the Scots controlled them until c1156 [Ref: Sanders Baronies p124]
