held the county of Drenthe north of the Rhineland, as had Balderich. Adam of Bremen indicates also held Fivelgau, an East Frisian county, before his deposition. [Ref: Jackman GermanCounties]

associated in the ducal government prioir to father's death in 1044; in 1044 retained Upper Lorraine and brother Gozelo II (presumably retarded in some way) was installed in Lower Lorraine, whereupon Godfrey rebelled against the crown. The Gesta of the bishops of Verdun indicated that Gopdfrey had been made guardian of the heiresses Beatrix and Sophie (sisters of Duke Frederick III of Upper Lorraine), and imply that his rebellion was justified in this context.
