Research Notes:
1127: claimed succession to the county of Flanders, after the murder of his cousin Charles the Good. His ambitions were tharted by the suspicion that he was implicated in the murder [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p795]

1133: fled the country[Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p795]

attached himself to Stephen of Blois, count of Boulogne, by marriage [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p795]

in charge of the Fleming mercenaries so important to Stephen throughout the civil war of his reign [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p795]

1141: fled from the battle of Lincoln, but thereafter ensured the safety of the queen, raised a new army, and led it to victory against the king's enemies [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p795]

though he held a large portion of the county of Kent, he was never formally styled Earl of Kent, nor was he so designated in his charters [Ref: CP VII p131]

though he acquired all the trappings of an earldom in Kent, Stephen never gave him the title for fear of offending the count of Flanders [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p795]
