Research Notes:
Traditional sources call the Cid's wife, Jimena Diaz, the daughter of Jimena
Alfonso, daughter of Alfonso V. This is clearly incorrect since Jimena's
brothers specifically call their mother Christina. In near contemporary
documents, Jimena Diaz is called "nepis" of Sancho II (and Alfonso VI). [Ref:

An account from the 18th century claimed that Jimena, wife of El Cid, was
daughter of Jimena Alfonso, the daughter of Alfonso V.
The work of Menendez Pidal, in the middle of this century, demonstrated that
Jimena, wife of El Cid was sister of Rodrigo and Fernando Diaz, and that these
were children of "Count Diego" and "Countess Christina". In a separate
document, one of them is named as grandson of Fernando Gundemariz. He then
concluded that Jimena Diaz was daughter of Diego by Christina Fernandez,
daughter of Fernando Gundemariz by Jimena Alfonso, daughter of Alfonso V.
Menendez Pidal failed to identify the Count Diego as any particular
individual.
Recently, Salazar Acha, in his analysis of the Vela family, concluded that
Diego was none other that a count Diego Fernandez, and this suggested that it
was he, and not Christina who was the child of Fernando Gundemariz. (Looking
at Menendez Pidal, one can find no reason he made Fernando Gundemariz the
maternal grandfather, rather than the paternal one.)
Now this Fernando Gundemariz is presumably the same one who appears in a
1040s document with his wife Muniadomna Ordonez (discussed by both Saez
Sanchez and Matosso, although the latter clearly misplaces her in the
pedigree). Taking another look at Menendez Pidal we find that he had no more
reason for making Jimena Alfonso the wife of Fernando Gundemariz than he did
for making them the parents of Christina. He appears to have simply concluded
that since she couldn't have been the mother, she must have been the
grandmother. I have found no documentation that Fernando Gundemariz was
married to anyone other than Muniadomna. Likewise, her name suggests that
Jimena Alfonso was daughter of Alfonso V by his second wife, Urraca Garcia of
Navarre, and if this is the case, she could not possibly have been the mother
of Diego Fernandez, for chronological reasons. [Ref: Todd Farmerie SGM

Finally, she [Torre Sevilla-Quinones de Leon] places into the same family the
paternal line of Jimena Diaz, wife of el Cid. Several years ago, Salazar Acha
identified her father "Count Diego" as a count Diego Fernandez. She then
speculated that it was he, and not his wife, who was child of Fernando
Gundemariz. Torre Sevilla-Quinones identifies him with the documented Diego
Fernandez, paternal grandson of the same count Flain Munoz tapped as
grandfather of el Cid, making husband and wife first cousins, once removed,
deriving from the same male line.
If her father is correctly placed as son of Fernando Flainez and his wife
Elvira Pelaez (his first cousin, daughter of the genealogical dead-end count
Pelayo Rodriguez and Gotina Fernandez de Cea, sister of Justa), and her mother
Christina as daughter of Fernando Gundemariz, it becomes difficult to explain
the tradition of relationship to Alfonso VI. The closest connection being
through sisters Justa Fernandez de Cea, Gotina Fernandez de Cea, Jimena
Fernandez de Cea, Queen of Navarre, but this relationship (one generation
closer) was shared by her husband, so it is unclear why her royal kinship was
notable, while kinship between el Cid and Alfonso was not noted. Perhaps this
favors Diego Flainez not being son of Justa, or perhaps the whole tradition of
