a narrative preserved in the Coucher Book of Furness Abbey states that he had previously married and been divorced from Maud, da of Robert de Holand, Lord Holand. In Feb 1326/7 he was only 16; it is possible that there had been some contract of marriage, for in 1332 he had licence to grant to the said Maud for life two of his manors. [Ref: CP IX p383(c)]
