He appears to have been the illegitimate son of his parents. The Arundell
property was settled by fine Trin 1347 (Case 287/43/401) on Richard, the XIVth
Earl, for life, with remainders successively to Eleanor, da of Henry de
Lancaster the elder, late Earl of Lancaster, and the heirs male of the bodies
of the said Richard and Eleanor. If no h male shall be so begotten, then to
Richard de Arundel the younger, in tail mail, and the right heirs of the Earl
successively. Another fine, All Souls 1354 makes a similar entail but adds
(after Richard de Arundel the younger), John and Thomas, brothers of the said
Richard de Arundell the younger, in tail mail successively, before the right
