Chaumes presents evidence which tends very strongly to show that the wife of Pepin King of Italy belonged to the family of Carloman, brother of Pepin the Short. Carloman's grandon, Abbot Alard of Corbie, son of Duke Bernard, was sent to Italy with Pepin, then a mere youth, and references in contemporary tend to confirm the fact that Duke Bernard was son of King Pepin the Short's brother and a cousin of Charlesmagne. Chaume suggests that the wife of Pepin King of Italy was a daughter of Carloman, cousin of Charlemagne, but it would seem more probable that she was one f the daughters of his brother Duke Bernard, the father of Abbot Alard. It was Abbot Alard, son of Duke Bernard, who was sent to Italy with the young Pepin and Pepin named his son Burnard, so it seems probable that his wife was one of Duke Bernard's daughters, Gndres and Therese.
