mother was an English woman. conjecture therefore that his father was one of the men who accompanied Emma of Normandy to England in 1002 for her marriage with Aethelred [Ref: Keats-Rohan Malet p15]

1060-1066: occurs with William I in a number of charters relating to the abbeys of Montvilliers and Jumieges [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]

1060: associated with the abbey of Preaux in the Lieuvin, of which he was given the fellowship by Abbot Ansfrid [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]

associated with the abbey of Bec, which later msitakenly identified him with his descendant, a monk of the same name [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]

before 1066: had landed interests in England [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p193]

1066: fought at Hastings, and was soon credited with having been ordered to bury Harold's body on the seashore; whether he had anything to do with Harold's buriel is uncertain, but it now seems clear that the body was buried at the church Harold founded at Waltham [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]

1068: castellan of the first castle at York, and sheriff of Yorkshire [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]

Sep 1069: when York was attacked by Danes, he was briefly held captive; William, his wife, and their children were among the few to escape alive [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]

lost the sherievalty of York and the land associated with it soon afterward [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]

William Malet and Esilia his wife are both named by Robert Malet as his parents in his foundation charter for Eye Priory (given before 1105) [Ref: Richard Borthwick SGM 10/18/1998]

Sheriff of York until his death [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p268]

gave Conteville (however he came by it) to the Abbey of Bec [Ref: Planche Conqueror&Companions v2p196]

died 1070/1 during the Fenland revolt [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022, Keats-Rohan Malet p14]

died abt 1071 subjugating the natives in the Fens [Ref: Richard Borthwick SGM 10/18/1998]

Though Miles Crispin a monk at Bec in 1120s and 30s in his "Miraculum de nobili genere Crispini" thought Esilia Crispin was the mother of William Malet (see e.g. Planche Conqueror&Companions Crispin), the general consensus is that Miles got it wrong [Ref: Richard Borthwick SGM 10/18/1998]

at his death the bulk of his wealth lay in the vast lordship (the honour of Eye) granted to him in East Anglia, principally in Suffolk, but also in Norfolk, Essex, Surrey, Bedfordshire, and Nottinghamshire [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1022]
