Research Notes:
possibly son of Hans Jacob Landis, b.c.1672. He died at Lampeter Township, Lancaster Co, PA, in 1730. His inventory was filed 2 Feb 1730 at Lancaster and included 100 acres of land. This 100 acres later was patented by his son Benjamin. He was married to Anna, probably sister of Benjamin Witmer. He was possibly the Hans Jacob Landis who was living at Immelhauserhof, Baden, Germany in 1709. He immigrated to Lancaster County in 1717. He bought 150 acres with Ulrich Howry in Lampeter Township and Jacob took the south half and sold the 75 acres to Andrew Schultz in March 1722. He was first taxed at Lampeter Township in 1728 as Jacob Landis next to Benjamin Witmer and near Felix Landis. In the 1721 tax list he was called John Jacob Landis. In 1724 he was taxed as Jacob Landis and son. The son taxed with him in 1724 was probably Hans Landis (1696-1756) who was the only other married Landis living there at the time. His land in Lampeter Township in 1746 was next to Benedict Witmer near Felix Landus. Conjectured sons of Hans Jacob Landis listed are: (1) Jacob Landis, b.c1694, d.c1722, Lampeter Twp; (2) Hans Landes, b.1696, d.Ephrata, Cocalico Twp 14 May 1756, will dated 6 May 1756 pro 30 Jul 1756 named wife and son John, probably the John Landis taxed net to Henry Landes and Jacob Schnebeli of Lampeter Twp in 1727, 24 Jan 1733 warranted 88 acres on a branch of Conestoga Creek, 16 days after Henry Landis warranted 150 acres on the same creek (now Warwick Twp), Henry patented his land but John Abandoned his land and on 27 Feb 1734 John warranted 135 acres on the east side of Cocalico Creek; (3) child b.c1699; (4) Henry Landis; (5) Benjamin landes, b.c1704, d.1781, Lampeter Twp, married Maria Weber, naturalized in 1729, lived on the land in Lamptere Twp which his father warranted in 1718, taxed at Lampeter Twp in 1751; (6) Barbara Landes, b.c1706, married Durs Buckwalter (c1702-1782); (7) Anna Landes, b.c1708, m(1) Christian Moser (1705-1741) son of Peter Moser of Ittlingen, Baden, m(2) Henry Tinkey [WTM: argument for this identification of father is based on (1) Henry naming Benjamin Landis one of executors of his will (presumably a brother); (2) taxed in 1727 next to John Landis (presumably a brother); (3) Jan 1733 warrant of land on Conestoga Creek was followed 16 days later by a warrant by John Landis (presumably a brother); and (4) the John Landis of #2 and #3 identified as the Hans Landis son of Hans Jacob Landis, based on the 1724 tax lists where Hans Jacob was taxed as Jacob Landis and son] [Ref: Davis Emigrants v3p227]

conjectured as son of John Landis who d.1727. John M Slabaugh reasonably speculates that Henry Landis, who married Veronica Groff, was a brother of John Landis Jr (1695-1771) and that both were sons of John Landis Sr, immigrant of Earl Township. Richard Warren Davis also assigns Henry Landis Sr as a son of John Landis Sr of Earl Township [WTM: Not according to my copy!]. John Sr undoubtedly was a Mennonite, though his son John Jr joined the Ephrata Cloister under the leadership of Conrad Beissel [Ref: Bittinger LANDIS p29]

conjectured that father was John Landis (1664-Dec 2 1727) of Earl Township, based on the proximity of Hans Graf's home to that of John Landis of Earl Township. If conjectured father is correct, then Henry lived less than 2 miles from future wife Veronica Graf. John Landis may have come first to Germantown or directly to the Pequea settlement before 1717, and settled north of Leola in what is now Earl Township by about 1720 [Ref: Slabaugh LANDIS p19]

conjectured that father was Hans Landis, b 1664, d 1727, Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. Only one brother listed, Hans Landis, b c1695, d.27 Nov 1771, Earl Twp, m. Anna Good. Jacob Landes b.1667, d.1730 m.An Witmer listed as brother of Hans Landis (1664-1727), and therefore uncle of Henry. [Ref: Best SwissOrigins p23]

probably the son of John/Hans Landis (?LS1731 was ?LS3264) of Earl Township, who was born 1664 and died December 2, 1727 [WTM: Best SwissOrigins, pub 1990, lists Hans Landis as LS3264; Groff Book pub 1997 is likely an update, but no clue where LS1731 fits into the family. Wilcox, pub 1995, has a footnote with letter from Jane Evans Best stating Hans Landis should be LS1258 in his chart. GIM file currently follows the Wilcox chart] [Ref: Best GROFF p81, Wilcox LANDIS p15]
