Mar 1371: agreement was that if Robert helped Isabel to recover her earldom, she would resign it in his favor. Evidently Robert did not become earl of Fife immediately - he was styled simply Earl of Menteith on 4 Dec 1471, but Earl of Fife and Menteith on 6 Mar 1372 [Ref: CP++ Fife 12/31/2006 (CP V p375)]

Sep 2 1403: created Earl of Athol, during the life of the reigning King with rem (should he die before the King) to his second son John. At the death of the King 4 Apr 1406, this earldom became extinct [Ref: CP I p311, CP I p78]

Jun 1406: at the Council after the death of his brother Robert III, he was made Regent; the King (his nephew James I) being then a prisoner in England [Ref: CP I p78]
