1138: fought aged 14 at battle of the Standard [Ref: Watney WALLOP #164]
received his father's possessions of Annandale just before the battle of the
Standard in 1138; they were both present at that engagement, but upon
different sides. He is said to have been taken prisoner by his own father, who
sent him to King Stephen, but that monarch courteously remitted him to his
mother at Skelton. The whole affair was probably a family arrangement to
prevent the lands, in the case of either side winning, from going out of the
