Research Notes:
heir of his father [Ref: CP XII/1 p755]
Guillaume de Jumieges states that "Rogerius Toenites de stirpe mala Hulcii,
qui Rollonis Ducis patruus fuerant ...", and it is debated whether the correct
reading is "mala Hulcii" or "Malahulcii", so that the passage is claiming that
Roger's ancestry can be traced back to an uncle of Rollo whose name was either
Malahulc or Hulc, depending on how the passage is read (the difference between
capital and lowercase letters being vague or nonexistent in many medieval
manuscripts). [Ref: Stewart Baldwin SGM 7/15/1997]
1013-4: joined with his father in the custody of the castle of Tillieres [Ref:
CP XII/1 p755]
styled sometimes Roger of Spain [Ref: CP XII/1 p756(b)]
abt 1035: Orderic's Interpolation in William of Jumieges says that Roger of
Conches fought briefly in Spain. This may have been a separate incident to the
prolonged stay in Spain of a Roger, usually identified as de Tosny, mentioned
in the chronicles of Adhemar and Clarius of Sens, where he married the
daughter of Ramon Berenguer I of Barcelona abt 1018 [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p380]
1038-9: While Duke Robert was away on pilgrimage, he went to Spain and
distinguished himself in fighing. When he returned to Normandy, he was furious
to learn that the boy William had succeeded his father in the Duchy, declaring
that a bastard ought not to rule over him and other Normans. Accordingly he
rebelled and ravaged the lands of his neighbors, particularly those of
Humphrey de Vielles; whose son Roger de Beaumont marched against him and in
the battle which followed Roger de Toeni and two of his sons were slain. [Ref:
CP XII/1 p755]
Standard-bearer of Normandy [Ref: CP VI p448]
Roger was exiled, and ended up "crusading" in and around Barcelona. Sources
from that area report that he married a (unnamed) daughter of the countess of
Barcelona (widow of Ramon Borrell). Norman sources only show him married to a
Godeheut, who as his widow remarried. What gives then? Was Adele his first
wife and Godeheut his second? Was Godeheut the Norman name for the Barcelona
princess? Is the Barcelona source wrong in stating that they married?
Helpful in solving the question would appear to be Berenger Hispina de Toeny.
I think it is safe to conclude that he owed his name to this marriage (and I
have often wondered if Hispina wasn't a garbled 'of Spain'). Unfortunately
his parentage is also in question. A recent account of the Tosny family
showed him as son of Roger and Adelaide, but Evans, in his paper of Todeny de
Belvoir showed him as belonging to that branch, and suggested that a second
Toeny married down south. Keats-Rohan seems to accept the marriage, and that
Adelaide was mother of Roger's children. [Ref: Todd Farmerie SGM 1/5/1999]
Keats-Rohan distinguishes Roger (I) and Roger (II) and infers that the latter
was the nephew of the former. The distinction is required otherwise Roger (II)
would have been a bigamist [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p381, Richard Borthwick SGM
7/14/1999]
There are two sources which report the marriage of "Roger" to a spanish lady.
One of them reports the marriage arranged by Ermesende to her daughter (who I
don't think is named in the original). The other reports the marriage of Roger
to Stephanie, who later married Garcia Sanchez of Navarre. On the Norman side,
there were two, presumably related, Tosny (Todeny) families. The more senior
one (Conches) of them traces to Roger de Tosny, who is known to have been
exiled from Normandy, and to have gained fame in Spain. It is to this Roger
that at least one of the above marriages explicitly refers. The junior line,
that of Belvoir, is of obscure origins, but an attempt has been made to derive
them from the spanish marriage based on the appearance of the name Berenger in
the family. There is no other evidence which suggests a spanish connection
for this branch, nor that known ancestor Robert was son of a Roger. [Ref:
Todd Farmerie SGM 7/14/1999]
There has been much written in an attept to clarify this whole question, none
of it successful. Evans, for example, suggested that not only did Roger of
Conches marry a Spanish princess, but there must also have been a connection
to Belvoir to explain the name Berenger. He proposed that Robert of Belvoir
was son of another (otherwise unknown) Roger, likewise exiled to spain and
likewise married to a spanish princess. His solution seemed to be turned on
its hat by Musset, who in writing on the Toeny instead placed the Berengers as
members of the Conches family, eliminating the need for the Todeny branch to
be brought into the equation at all.
Keats-Rohan returns to the Evans theory, but follows Stasser (and perhaps
Evans, I will have to look it up) in making Stephanie, wife of Garcia Sanchez
daughter of Ramon Borrel, Count of Barcelona. This appears to be an attempt to
unify the two theories - making the wife of Roger and Garcia the daughter of
Ermesende, while eliminating the "widow" problem, since the death of the
hypothetical Todeny Roger would have freed up Stephanie to remarry. There are
several problems here. First of all, all Iberian works with which I am
familiar (and as recent as 1996) are united in calling the Queen of Navarre
the daughter, not of Ramon Borrel and Ermesende, but of her brother Bernard,
Count of Bigorre, and sister of the Queen of Aragon. Likewise the recent work
of Salazar Acha concludes, based on onomastics, that Stephanie had been
previously married to a relative of Queen Constance of France, and there is
hardly room for a marriage to a Tosny in here too. [Ref: Todd Farmerie SGM
