Research Notes:
of Belvoir, Leicestershire [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v2p392]
his cognomen Brito distinguished him from his Norman namesake, the
Pincerna [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p271]
Two persons named William de Albini lived at this time. One, called Pincerna,
whose romatic adventures with Adelaide, Queen Dowager of France, are related
by Dugdale in his 'Baronage,' married Adeliza, the widow of King Henry I. The
other was surnamed Brito, probably in order to distinguish him from his
celebrated contemporary [Ref: Foss Judges p6]
son of Robert de Todeni, the standard-bearer of William the Conqueror ... died
in 1088 ... by his wife Adela left four sons, eldest William Albini [Ref: Foss
Judges p6]
as second son in search of fortune, joined the forces of Henry I as a
knight of the Breton contingent under the orders of Helie, Count of Le Mans
[Ref: Daykin Daubeney p290]
distinguished himself in 1106 at the battle of Tenchebrai [Ref: Foss Judges
p6]
27 Sep 1106: distinguished himself at the battle of Tinchebrai against the
forces of Henry's brother Robert [Ref: Daykin Daubeney p290]
1106: fought at Techebral for Henry I [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p271, Watney WALLOP
#298]
possible that the victory at Tinchebrai brought the favor of Henry an the
marriage with Cecily, the heiress of Belvoir [Ref: Daykin Daubeney p290]
probable that the Aubigne lordship, on the death of his elder brother Ralph,
reverted to William, who then passed it to his younger son Ralph [Ref: Daykin
Daubeney p291]
1134: was a wtness, immediately after Hugh Bigot, and before Richard Basset,
to the charter by which Henry granted the office of Great Chamberlain to
Alberic de Vere [Ref: Foss Judges p6]
1104-16: attested numerous royal charters, the earliest belonging to the
period 1104 to 1116 [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p271]
obtained part of the fees of Belvoir before Cecily's mother was given
posession of it; the marriage, therefore, may have been arranged to settle
rival claims [Ref: CP IX p578(c)]
held land in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Essex, Hertfordshire, and
Northamptonshire, some or all of which was his wife's marriage portion [Ref:
Keats-Rohan DD p272]
c.1130: the bulk of the Tosny inheritance, including Belvoir, appears not
to have beenheld by William and Cecilia until c.1130, after the death of
Cecilia's mother Adeliz [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p272]
1130: appears as an itinerant justice in Lincolnshire [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD
p272]
1135-43: attested a number of Lincolnshire charters by King Stephen [Ref:
Keats-Rohan DD p272]
1146: Stephen granted William's estates to Ranulf of Chester. The general
tenor of the grant, and the absence of any indication that William had joined
the Empress, indicate that Stephen was granting the overlordship of William's
estates in order to gain Ranulf's support, and not that William had suffered
any royal disfavor. [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p272]
1148: earliest possible date for a charter he gave for Pipewell abbey [Ref:
Keats-Rohan DD p272]
completed the foundation of Belvoir priory, begun by Robert de Tosny [Ref:
Keats-Rohan DD p272]
