2nd Earl of Atholl [Ref: Burke Peerage p1914, ES II #89, SP I p3, SP I p416]
stated to have been son of Madach, or was son of Madach, 1st Earl
of Atholl, by a prior marriage [CP I p304]. Malcolm is stated in the Durham
Liber Vitae to be the son of Mad[ach]. The suggestion that his father was
called Maldolm originated with a misreading of "Mad" as "Mal" in Stevenson's
1841 edition of the Liber (see Scots Peerate vol 1 p416 note 4) [Ref: CP I
p304, CP++(proposed) Atholl 7/2002 (CP I p304)]
Liber Vitae Ecclesia Dunelmensis, vol 60, as printed by the Surtees Society,
gives on p. 100 the entry as "Malcolmus filius Mal et comes Athodlie", a
reading which has caused various writers, as Sir Noel Paton in The Celtic
Earls of Athole, and others, to assume that Malcolm was the son of a Malcolom
who is named in 1094 in a charter by King Duncan I to Durham, though this was
difficult to reconcile with chronology. The present article (SP Atholl) was at
first written to the same effect, but while examining, for another matter, a
fine autotype of f. 60 of Liber Vitae, kindly lent by Sir Archibald Hamilton
Dunbar of Northfield, the writer discovered that the original words were
"Malcolmus filius Madi, comes Athodlie," which appear clearly to prove that
Malcolm was the son as well as the successor of Madach, and thus to remove all
chronological difficulties [Ref: SP I p416(4)]
made a donation to the Priory of St. Andrews at some date before 1174, and to
Dunfermline between 1183 and 1186. [Ref: CP I p304]
